You know, the Shallow Water Sailors have this program called the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Air Force has this outfit that's even been to war before called the Civil Air Patrol. If the gummint is attempting to recruit ordinary citizens to do their job for them, the thought does occur to me those two auxiliary outfits would be a good place to start.

Besides, didn't the Navy get privateering outlawed about a century and a half ago? I ask because it does occur to me that their equipping privately-owned vessels with government-owned gear (though not officially with guns, at least so far) to carry out a governmental function - protection of harbors and waterways - is skirting very close to the line that defines privateering.

Now, if the yankee gummint starts talking about organizing militias to do patrol work here to free up regular soldiers and National Guardsmen, we'll know something is up! (Do you think they'd sign folks like us up, or are we too off the wall for them just because we like guns?)

Why not just do both? You could launch them off the plank like skeet, and then fire away.

We in the Swiss Coast Guard take our counter-terrorism responsibilities seriously. If they start coming across Lake Geneva, we're ready for them!

You may want to have your First Mate take a quick check astern before firing that thing, Mitch. By the time you take your finger off the trigger, you'll probably be going backwards.

Seriously though, this sounds a little like their attempt after 9/11 to have our meter readers and service technicians trained to look for suspicious activity while making their rounds. Nothing like spying for the government to build rapport with the customers...

Well, that's kind of the way we looked at it, mym1a. One reason our guys don't get run off more often is because the customers know they're strictly there to do their job, instead of poking around for the cops, the feds or the bill collectors. If word got out they were being trained to snoop along the way, there'd be trouble.
