Lee Die Problem

Hello everyone,
I have small problem with my Lee .223 full-length sizing die.

I had a stuck case in the die. I drove it out by loosening up the decapper clamp and driving out the decapper pin. Now I can't seem to get the pin back into the clamp. Is there a secret or did I possibly damage something?

Any thoughts?

First thought, if you don't have carbide dies, you have to use lube. As for getting the pin back in, haven't a clue. If you know/knew about using the lube, then obviously disregard.

Haven't a clue on the rest... Someone will I'm sure...

You might try backing the holding nut for the decapping pin all of the way out. There might still be a little bit of tension on the hole where the decapping pin is inserted.

My Lee .223 dies are fine, thank you.

And did you take the nut all the way out and try? That's my only idea, too.

You may have mushroomed the top of the pin. Try what jswaff said first if that doesn't work inspect the pin. You may have to order a new pin.

Well, the case was lubed with hornady one shot, maybe this case didn't get enough lube.

I got it back in, but now I can't seem to get it lined up with the top of the clamp.

At any rate, I think maybe the top of the pin is peened a little bit.

Well, I emailed Lee and explained the problem. They didn't offer any advice, but just told me to email my home address and they would send me a new decapper and clamp free of charge! Thanks Lee!

Sounds like they are going to take care of you. Haven't had any complaints about Lee equipment and I am getting ready to buy more.

I realize that you are getting a new decaping pin, but in the meantime, remove the decaping adjusting nut and get a file or sandpaper and work on the mushroomed end of the pin. Do just a little bit at a time untill the pin just snugly slides through the hole in the cap.

I will probably do that when I get a chance. I'll keep the messed up one as a spare if I can get it cleaned up.

Bad, I am seeing a pattern here. It was Hornady Unique Case Lube that gave me my one stuck .223 case.

I keep hearing all these stories about stuck cases with the spray lubes I sure for some they work great and never have a problem,I use the Lee resizing lube in a tube $1.50 at my store. I have use these types of case lubes always and never had a stuck case in 25 years. It must be an application problem of some kind.

Hornady Unique is a paste, not a spray lube. I haven't had a stuck case yet using my cheap Frankfort Arsenal spray on lube.

I had the exact same problem using the Lee dies in my RL-550. After using a big hammer and a long punch several times I polished the inside of the die using a large bore swab mounted in a drill with some fine polishing compound I got from Brownells. I also switched over to the Dillon lube. This is great stuff and since I started using it I have never had a stuck case again and it going on 10 years now.
