Ever go to Fark.com? They have a Florida Tag for a reason. Just read your news from your state, it has nothing to do with being liberal. You guys just have some messed up news from Florida.

Go to any University study on "Heat absorption of gasses compared to Water Vapor"
Water vapor = 1.0
CO2 = .01
O2 = .01
N = .01
Not quite.

Venus is much hotter than Mercury, and Mercury is much closer to the sun.

Mercury has no atmosphere to trap heat at all. Thus, it cools rapidly on the non-sunward side. In fact, it's barely warmer than space on that side.

Same deal with Mars. More tenuous atmosphere plus further away equals much colder than it would be just based on distance.

Venus's atmosphere is about 93 times more massive than ours. Thus, the CO2 is present in much, much higher quantities. Enough to turn it into the seething hell it is. The sulfur dioxide in its atmosphere also helps.

This makes Venus's surface much hotter than Mercury's which has a minimum surface temperature of -220 °C and maximum surface temperature of 420 °C, even though Venus is nearly twice Mercury's distance from the Sun and receives only 25% of Mercury's solar radiance.

Nice try though, but your explanation just doesn't hold water due to Venus's higher surface temp than something twice as close to the sun.

CO2 in an atmosphere does work to trap heat. It's the amount by which it actually does that's really the issue here. The real question is how much our industrialization is really adding to the increase in global temperature and climate change that does exist. The fact that it is and does vary isn't at issue, it's whether we're pushing it that much. Additionally, whether we cause it or not, if temperatures do climb, we need to deal with it regardless, but the methodology (less CO2 production) espoused by some may very well not help the situation at all. We may need to take a different tack.

Sure, but not like you can on Florida. Seriously, just browse Drew Curtis' FARK.com for 1 week and look at all the Florida articles.

You better check again ...And look at mass (5% of Earth)as well and Mercury does have a gaseous atmospere of Hydrogen and Helium,and a Hotter average Temp than Venus which is Much larger in Mass (almost equal)...The Solar System
Water Vapor will cause More Global warming than will gasses...

Mebbe we're spiraling closer and closer to hell...or the sun. Whichever is hotter.

When are they gonna barbecue that teacher on the stake? I know there's some people in the eat your buddies thread that probably want dibs on the rib meat.

[quote=troy2000;5056 This time there's a general (I didn't say unanimous) consensus in the scientific community that something is happening and the evidence is there...[/quote]

thats just it troy, if there is a "consensus" in the scientific community then it isn't science, you can't have consensus in science. either the proof is there or it isn't. ypu can't have it both way's.
you will never convince me that the global warming crowd hasn't adopted it out of pure liberalism. or better yet it has become a religion to them.
they have their god "the earth", they have their worship places"national parks" and the like, AND THEY HAVE THEIR SAVIOR "AL GORE".
who is making a killing off of selling " CARBON CREDITS" to other business's
so that they can still pollute.
if that isn't the height of hipocracy than i don't know what is.
like i said earlier we might be in a warming period BUT IT IS NATURAL, not man made. in the next few yrs. we will start a cooling period, then i bet all the alarmist will say that we are in a "man made ICE AGE". give me a break.
the kioto accord was just a ploy to soak billions out of the U.S.and other leading nations. it did not curtail any polluting from other countries like china or india or russia. those three countries put out more pollutents than the U. S. or any other mechanical industrial nation.
it's time that we stand up as a nation and tell the experts and AL GORE
that we are tired of being made to look like fools.

Yes, Rich. Water vapor causes more greenhouse effect than CO2. No one is claiming all the greenhouse effect is caused by CO2. If it weren't for greenhouse gases, including water vapor, this planet wouldn't be habitable. What they're saying is that the balance has shifted because of extra CO2, and there's a little extra heat retained each year, increasing the average temperature. A very small change in average temperature can have dramatic effects on weather and climate.

I don't think you meant to say the mass of Venus is five percent of Earth's; it looks like your post got garbled somewhere between writing and posting. Venus's diameter is only four hundred miles less than Earth's diameter, and it has roughly 4/5ths the mass. Mercury is much hotter because it's much closer, not because it's much smaller. I'll look that up tomorrow, when I have a better connection.

Don't argue with me about what you think the temperature of Venus would be without the CO2 atmosphere; go look it up. I can give you a handful of links if you don't want to google it yourself, and they're all basic science sites that have nothing to do with global warming.

I don't make this crap up, Rich. And I don't go to Rush or O'Reilly when I want to learn science, either. It's a shame that science has become a political football, where conservatives think they have to discredit global warming purely because it's been branded a liberal belief.

Mercury is 5% of the mass of the Earth is what I said ,and is Hotter than Venus which is almost the same size as Earth....Both are too Hot to live on !
Answer me This...Why do we get Colder Here in the North in Winter when The distance to the Sun remains the same ??? I'll tell you...Just the slightest distance because of the angle in relation to the Equator and lack of number of Solar Hours causes the Polar Ice cap to grow and the temps go from +75 degrees to -50 or colder here in Alaska....Hence the seasons...
If you measure the distance it changes due to the angle it works out to a few thousand miles Difference is all...
This is how critical our Orbit around the sun is...and the distance is.
The Global Warming Alarmists still can't tell me why It has been warming many Degrees since the Last Ice age WITHOUT MAN's so called Influence and in 100 years we have only gained 4/5 of a degree Centigrade...???
CO2 My Butt !

I'll leave the "discussion" of GlobAl Warming to all y'all, but I do take exception with the nonsense of Florida bashing. It's as egregious as California bashing, Wisconsin bashing, or any else. ALL states have their problems - most of Florida's come from the idiots moving in from elsewhere.
All state's education departments get stupid, regarding the principal of Zero Tolerance, and bending over backwards to NOT offend some minority or special interest group - they end up offending and punishing far more people.

There has to be more to this 'story' than a simple parlor trick. Somebody wants that teacher gone. If not the admin, then look to whoever made the initial complaint - some bad blood there, I'll betcha.

So stop bashing Florida, or NO MORE ORANGE JUICE for y'all!!
