Just because it says BP (British Petro), doesn't mean it is necessarily owned or controlled by the Brits.

$126 per barrel does not mean we are buying it for that, it only means it is selling for that and yet all the Gas Dealers raise their prices on Oil FUTURES that haven't even left the drill site yet.

It use to be, you could only charge more for the inventory you paid more for and now it is on the mere news of higher prices whther you have it or not.

Keep buying them Hondas, and Nissans and Toyotas and all them other IMPORTs and the Dollar will stay strong and we will be soon bragging how we are paying $6.00 per gallon. Yup! Keep the IMPORTS flowing and the American Dollar weak and we will all be HAPPY little PUPPET AMERICANS.

I can't decide if you are baiting me (trolling?) or just didn't get the memo about Britains use of the pound sterling (no, not the euro) as well as the information that Britain is a socialist country

The Bank Of England owns most major enterprises and simply hangs up a shingle to keep track of the dollars Mitch.

Didya know that Shell is almost half owned by BP? I'll quest out a vid for ya Mitch called The History Of Oil (chuckle) but here's a link with a short read..
Chapter 2

ah here it is Mitch, it's a stand up comedy with historical footnotes, about 45 minutes of high entertainment!

Gas around here is up to 4.50 in the closest two cities, and is suppose to be a 4.40 here tomorrow. Gas stations were jam packed today with everyone filling up at 3.77. I filled up my little 100cc on off bike for 2.76. Then i got a flat tire just got it licensed today, guess i was not meant to. Hopefully fix it tomorrow 70 mpg is hard to argue with even only going 55. lol

Well, this morning gas had dropped $.06 to $3.69 a gallon, but diesel went up $.10 to $4.39 a gallon. One of the guys I work with said an hour later on his way to work, gas had gone up to $3.85 a gallon.... I'll have to check on my way home from work and see what it's at around here.

Not to start a pissing match, but blaming high gas on foregin cars makes zero sense. What is considered an import now? Is a Chevy made in Canada an import? Is a Mazda made in the USA a domestic?

Actually the IMPORTS are causing the Dollar to weaken in the world market that seems to favor the Euro.

The Canadian Dollar just a few short years ago was only worth $.50 USD and is now worth $1.03 USD. Being that Canada is the largest exporter of oil to the U.S. the value of the dollar means alot. IT isn't that Oil costs more, it is just that it takes more USD to buy it. Based on the U.S. economy and the future that Investors see in the U.S. means alot on what the USD will be worth tomorrow and sending our Money out of country at a faster rate that foriegn money is coming into the country decreases the value. Hence Toyotas, Hondas, etc etc etc. BUY AMERICAN and make America stronger. We went thru this about 35 years ago and I guess our lessons were only temporary.

It doesn't matter if they are made in the U.S. or not it matters where the Investors are and what countries the profits end up at. Being made here wil only release PAYROLL dollars and not Cooperate profits.

Buying imported goods does not weaken the dollar. Once you buy your Chinese trinket and that dollar goes to China, it doesnt magically disappear. They have to do something with that dollar. They have to buy something sold in dollars. Most, no doubt, doesnt wind up purchasing an actual product but instead gets invested into....drum roll please....the US economy. So saying that buying imports lowers the dollar just doesnt wash.

China in fact is one of the biggest supporters of the dollar, they for sure have done far more to prop up the dollar than our own government has. The last thing they want is their money raising in value to the dollar. When that happens, they have to charge more US dollars for their goods so people here buy less Chinese goods and more domestic goods and goods from other countries. They have a major stake in keeping the dollar strong.

What is causing the dollar to drop is really 2 things

1 is speculative trading. Often times if these traders feel the dollar will drop then it will because of the trades they initiate based on that feeling. Hence its like a self fulfilling prophecy. So whats different here than in the past you ask. Simple, in the past Clinton, Bush Sr and even Reagan would keep a close handle on this and when several speculators would hedge against the dollar the Treasury would buy dollars, which would cause the dollar to rise and wreck the speculators betting against it. Bush has pushed a "do nothing" policy and let the dollar wander where it may.

2. The Feds are making it real hard on investors seeking to move more wealth into the dollar. By lowering interest rates so low while other countries are raising them makes investing in the US much less appealing than investing in other countries.

So you can scream "BUY AMERICAN" all you want but really if you think about it the whole attitude of "BUY AMERICAN" is in itself un-American. Instead try the American way, the way of the capitalist, and buy whichever product you can get for the best price and quality you need regardless of where it comes from.

I assume the lesson we forgot from 30 years ago is the Japan deficit. I remember people running around screaming doom and gloom, that the Japanese were going to own us, and so on and so on. In reality it just proves my point. Where do you think all those US dollars the Japanese got from us went? Looks like we made out pretty good in that "lesson".

The main Reason that Canada has a stronger dollar is that they controlled the spending of their money in other countries. They did it by charging you huge amounts when you tried to get it back into Canada.
I live near Canada and you can NOT buy cars made for Canada and that isn't just because of the Kilometers versus the Miles, it has to do with Trade agreements.
We have what is called a TRADE DEFICIT and it is because we IMPORT more than we EXPORT and that money went overseas. China has NOT helped the U.S. dollar unless you want to consider that them BUYING all of the I.O.U.s is helping. They could actually almost KICK US out of our own country because they just about own it.

Buying American is a very healthy ordeal for the American Economy and I am surprised you don't see that. During the OIL EMBARGO of the 70s that was the biggest movement for getting the U.S. back on her feet and it worked. We had little American Flags on everything American Made and people bought into the idea. President Reagan continued and expanded the idea and we were PROUD to be AMERICANS and we were PROUD of our products. He stood up to the Unions and did not give in to them, one Prime example was the ATC strike, they all became PAST EMPLOYEES. We need to tell the Unions that $76.00 per hour making cars is extrodinary wages and shut up and be happy, otherwise more and more manufacturing will relocate over the borders and there will be lost wages as well.

BUY AMERICAN and help AMERICA not some foreign country. Help the U.S. dollar become strong again by building a quality American economy and not a reflective economy.

The U.S. dollar is weak all over the Globe and I guess you could thank NAFTA for that decline as well as OUTSOURCING of so many of our products. The U.S. Dollar is converted to the currency of choice by World Banks or is reused to buy INVESTMENTS with in the U.S. borders and as they INVEST in OUR businesses they become BIGGER and STRONGER and we become but a memory. It is called ECONOMICS 101.

My family will become Wealthier and stronger if I deposit my money in my own BANK ACCOUNTS and not someone elses. If I invest and reap the earning off of my OWN investments and put the money back into my family, my family will grow and become larger. Putting OUR money in foreign pockets in no way helps ME. If we Invested in ourselves the Govt would not have to be playing with the Interest Rates and chasing its tail. The DO NOTHING attitude is the BEST ATTITUDE, that is IF we are investing in ourselves. The dollar should be able to stand on its own, it did for decades. It use to be the Role Model for the whole world and was compared to the Yen, Ruble, Franc, Marc, Pound, etc etc and now we try to keep it strong by shifting INTEREST RATES? How so secure is that?

Once again. You and I just differ on this. The whole "buy American" campaign doesnt help America. It is socialism at its heart. Why should I buy inferior products at higher prices? The only way this helps American companies is that it helps make them lazy and incompetent. I practice capitalism not socialism so when I go in a store I buy the best product for the best price that best fits my needs regardless of where it comes from. If I was a socialist then I would say "Hmmmm I am going to buy this American product and help the collective". Do I buy food from China? I try my best not to, its not that big of a deal with me though because most of the food I eat is farm/garden raised. Those little freeze dried strawberries in your cereal...China. Apple juice...mostly China. There are tons and tons of goods you buy from China that you have no idea that they are actually Chinese products.

I seriously doubt that you could buy much of anything that is entirely made in America in this day and age. Even products assembled in the US are made from foreign source materials. So I am not just saying that its un-American to "Buy American" its also impossible.

Those "IOUs" that China and Japan have up until now been buying up, which you seem to blow off, IS the biggest support behind the dollar right now. Without that this whole house of cards will implode. Which may happen since US consumers are slowing down on their purchases finally, Japan and China both have less motivation to keep buying US bonds.

I call it Pride in our Country and YOU call it socialism. I guess we come from TWO very different schools and your discription of socialism doesn't even come close to mine. How you have Pride in buying American as being socialism is beyond me. I guess if you compare Apples to Granite and you look hard enough and for long enough, you may find a real small similarity.

I have no problem going to the Farmer's Market and buying 100% American, I have no problem buying from AMERICAN owned Enterprises. I do not own a single thing that has anything but an American name on it. Sure! no doubt there is portions of the product imported but the PROFITS stay in THIS Country.

How can you tell you are buying the BEST product? Do you run tests in the store before buying it? I will settle for American made and American grown. Thank You. That to me is what will make this American Economy strong again and if everyone decided to STOP buying American for whatever reason, there will be no more America. We will be nothing more than an Foreign FRANCHISE.

When I got into Anchorage, what did I see in the paper ?

Senate blocks ANWR development.

Glad to see our "leaders" are on top of the situation.

Holding these resources in reserve only allows the dollar to be used against us. It also gives a fair bit of $ and nasty toys to those who would do us harm.

STOP THE MADNESS !

Could be, but after reading about Egypt and the bread lines, it seems that many countries are going to be in a World of Sh-t and the SH-t may really hit the fan. It would be a good feeling to know we have oil to keep our planes aloft and our military mobile and the ships moving. Who knows where this is going to end, but it seems from my predictions that a few Ahabs are probably going to be meeting their 70 Virgins. When the world gets fed up all the Camels in the world won't be helping them. They will need something a bit bigger. I predict that the Hell is going to break loose in about 60 days. When we can not supply the food to the other countries as we have been because we are having to supply ourselves, there will be wars. I don;t really think we are going to come out of this one as gracefully as e came out of it in 75. Hope to God, I am wrong.

I didnt say that there was anything wrong with buying American products. What I said was that it is wrong to exclude imported products solely because they are imported.

I too have pride when I buy something American, theres nothing wrong with taking pride in your country, believe me I do. What I dont do is just buy it because it is American. For example if I am buying jeans I buy Nautica because I like the fit and finish better on them than any other. They say made in USA but most of them arent, just like Levi, Lee and practically every other brand. You can still buy some Wranglers made here but I have never liked them. My tiller is a very old Troy built, made in USA and is hands down the best tiller out there and I am very proud to have it.

Unfortunately today just because it has an American name on it doesnt mean it was made in the US. Most large manufacturers have moved overseas so those spiffy Levis hanging in your closet were probably made outside the US.

I am really not sure how to take your question "How can you tell you are buying the BEST product?". When I buy something I do research it and try to figure out which is the best for me. The best imo means the product that will do the best job at what I want it to do and will do it for a long time without breaking or wearing out.

Like I said we just differ on this. IMO buying American just because its American is practiced by either racists or well intentioned people misguided into a socialist practice by patriotism. I am sure you fall into the later category so dont start spouting that I am suggesting that you are racist.

The proof is as they say in the pudding. In the 80s people were screaming that Japan practically owned the US. Every time a Japanese business or businessman bought property in the US it was televised and asserted as proof that one day soon Japan would own the US. People where saying stuff like "Who really won WWII?". People were screaming about the deficit and all the dollars pouring out of the country. Now its being replaced with China. One difference in the whole thing is that unlike Japan, China is not our friend but they are really not an enemy at this point either. Despite our having a huge trade deficit for the past 30 years, our economy has exploded over that time frame.

Its just not as simple anymore as saying that if you buy American products you are supporting America. Whether you like it or not the global economy is here to stay.

Wing--you are right about the food thing. Starvation drives revolutions. We're fortunate in that we can generally feed our people and our $ spent on food is a relatively low fraction of our income compared to other nations. As energy prices climb, crop and food prices will follow suit. You can probably still eat if food prices double or triple. Not so for alot of the world.

My point about our own oil is it's time to take the cuffs off and get out of the way. We need to develop energy sources, and we need to use what we got here in the mean time. This is our own coal and oil. The people I talk to in AK want oil exploration--rightfully, the oil's theirs as well (it's sitting under their state). Why does Washington get in the way ?

Other countries make the $, and then use it to buy at bargain basement prices back in the US, exploiting our weakening dollar. Holding oil in reserve (or coal) at this stage is asinine. Many of these other countries don't like us as well, and can use the $ to push their agendas. What happens WHEN we finally do develop hydrogen power cars, nuclear breeders and fusion, etc., and the oil loses value--once again we've passed up an opportunity to effectively be OUR OWN OPEC. Meanwhile, more $ by foreign interests also means the potential for these $ to corrupt our own government by potentially "buying" politicians. These politicians then "globalize" our liberties and values, and undermine our own constitution. The threat from sitting on our resources is very real.

A global economy is fine, but allowing other countries to hurt our core values by exploiting our economy isn't. To prevent this, our government needs mostly to get out of the way, save initiaitives TO BUILD new energy sources.

I can agree with almost everything you are saying here.

I for sure agree about the food part. Buying food is an entirely different matter than buying a pair of jeans. It is impossible to import food that can equal the quality of what each of us can grow in our garden or purchase at a farmers market. When it comes to food it is absolutely a necessity for your health and quality of life to purchase local grown food.

Importing resources that we already have, such as oil, is also completely ridiculous and has made our country a slave to the very people we are at war with.

Here's an article that outlines another contributing factor to the feeding frenzy over rising gas prices; the global warming/environmentalist scare...another facet in consumer panic generation:

Senators Warn Bill Could Spike Gas $1.50 to $5 a Gallon

I rode my bike to work yesterday and it felt great, to save on fuel consumption and get a little exercise. The effort helped reduce stress levels as well...gotta do it again soon, maybe even regularly.
