Congress has a Job Approval rating of 19.8%.

I'd have to say that the Military Job Approval rating is much higher... even when you takes the politicians out of the decision making process.

... who deserves a cut in pay and benefits?

Now thats an idea. I think that their pay should match the avg income from their respective states. That way the decisions they make would have a real impact directly on them. They would have to do a better job for their constituents so they could eat something besides pork and beans. I would also give them the same health benefits that their constituents get. They would have to pay for their own health insurance. Now that might just make them a little more careful about what legislation they pass.

From another thread: here's my idea.

Save the President and Veep of the U. S. (due to the CINC real time issues) all of our political "leaders" live just like us. No inherent "secuirty" from sources we pay for (save overseas travel--this could be an issue)--if they have a CCW (issued by the same process as the rest of us) they can have their pistol or open carry in the states allowing this just like the rest of us, no special exemptions for them (being "important" or VIP's), no "priority" in airports (they travel on the jet just like the rest of us and go thru the same lines), they pump their own gas, they pay their own checks. They don't get the "I'm important and I'm wearing a suit" clause in American Society.

I really think this'd work. Time to get our government reps who've been (IMHO) bribed by loopholes in our political system out. RIGHT NOW.

This is what we call a "pipe dream" and it will never happen. They will constantly use how they need to keep those benefits and pay to compete with the private sector to attract smart and successful people to the government, otherwise no one would want to run with no pay and no benefits and they would all just be CEOs.

That was sarcasm if you couldn't tell

There's no pipe dream ever to what's right. It was more than a dream for me to have the opportunity to serve my country for the time that I did. I'd ask no less of those elected to govern.

Oh, no doubt, I would ask for some "reasonable" things from our government, but that is also a pipe dream. It will never happen unless we overhaul the system, and many will fight it and some will jump ship and go corporate.

There is a reason it is like it is.

That's an irrelevant number, though. What they should be asking is, "do you approve of the job being done by the particular congressmen and women you vote for?" Obviously, more people do than not, or they'd be voting them out.

I wouldn't say it's irrelevant... but more of an average, some higher satisfaction while others are occupying the basement. The fact still remains, the populous is not satisfied at all in most of the Govt.

Maybe the congressional members should be paid by performance instead of position?

Those who are not doing their jobs will (or should be) voted out of office.
