I just got back from BassPro Shop here in Grapevine, Tx and the wifey bought me a box of Winchester 30-06 168gr Ballistic Silvertips for $29.99 without tax. After getting home I checked the price of the ammo on www.midwayusa.com from where I have heard many ppl tell me I can get ammo for a cheap price. The same rounds on midwayusa are 33.99 without tax or shipping. IMO that's pretty crappy being that I can get them right away, cheaper, and without shipping cost at a local store. My point is be carefull buying ammo online at this site as my experience shows that you can probably get the same box cheaper locally!
With the cost of ammo prices I'm interested in finding places online that I can get quality ammo at low prices. Please post sites where you get your ammo at a deal I'd appreciate it.
I've not had any experience with the ballistic silvertips, but I've read a few favorable reviews regarding accuracy. That being said I'd really like to know more about the on game performance of these rounds on deer/hogs (168gr Ballistic Silvertip 30-06). I just don't want something that is going to explode at close range and ruin a lot of meat. My buddy hit a hog at about 60 yards with a 150gr core-lokt in the '06 and the bullet fragmented in the neck so I bought the 165's (core-lokt) which I've not tested on game but have read from others that they punch through and through. I'm hoping that the 168gr Ballistic Silvertips punch through also without much weight loss. I have read a few reviews of the 150gr Ballistic Silvertips exploding at close range in the '06, but I didn't find much about the 168gr's

the only way i have ever gotten what i consider a really good deal was by spending a few hours searching the web.
and then buying 2 or 3000 rounds at once.
you gotta be brave with that wallet to do that though.
i hate the fact that it takes money to save money but what are ya gonna do?

+1 Volume counts. At one time midway had good prices. A lot of times I look stuff up on their sight then search the web using there description. I know you can order a lot of stuff straight from the manufacturer. Like Wolff springs and Optima triggers.

I found Midway very expensive too. Walmart or Bass Pro are cheaper. There are several on line places too much cheaper. ammoman.com is good and free shipping but you have to buy bulk.
Wal-mart tends to be the cheapest around here with a couple of big IF's:
-if they happen to carry what you want
-if they happen to have it in stock
-if you can find someone to open the case for you
-if you don't grow old and senile while waiting for 5 people to fill out and purchase fishing liscenses and forget what you went there to get in first place
I normally buy my 9mm, .45ACP, and .22lr there.
I'm curious to those that have purchased online, what's the average price for shipping say 1,000 rounds of .223 or .45 ACP?
You just got lucky I think, on that good price. I checked 5 of the common online stores and the lowest was $31.27 and the highest was $33.23. I hope you bought a case.

Midway and CTD seem close sometimes to what I pay online for some of my ammo or at Cabela's. Some stuff is higher. Like any deal, it's shopping around and all ammo has gone up. The shipping, though, puts stuff I order online pretty high at time. I've found pretty good deals lately at Academy sports store, as well as Wally World if they've got what I'm looking for.

That's very funny what you said about wal-mart, but very true. I buy winchester white box for plinking, and I also get box's of 30-06 Rem. Core-lokts at wally world for $14.65! The remington core-lokts are good rounds, but if these Winchester BST's are as accuracte for me in my rifle as many other ppl have claimed I will be using them for the area's I hunt where long shots are the norm. I did quite a bit of googling yesterday and found that the price I paid for the winchester bst at Bass Pro was cheapest by far (29.99). You won't believe this, but there was some site offering them for a whopping $51 bucks!!! I couldn't beleive it, and I'm sure they don't sell there.
I think a big part of the reason for the rounds being priced cheaper at BassPro has to do with timing (being out of deer season). During the season they were going for about $38.00 dolllars if I remember correctly. (v.s 29.99). I'm going to head back there and get a few more boxes while they are still priced down.

midway used to be a place where you got good prices, and free shipping. now days, to get a good price at midway, it has to be on sale, otherwise you'll be overpaying, especially with midways jacked up shipping.
You know those deals where something has a good price but you don't need it right now and a few weeks later you do need it?Buy it while it is on sale and you will have it when you need it. sam.
