Actually, burning tires can be quite useful (although not usually around people's necks.... ). If I'm not mistaken, Spaceship 1 (once clear of the J85 powered mothership), used a combination of powdered rubber from old tires and oxidizer (I believe nitrous) to power its rocket system. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I remember the presentation at OSH a few years back. Pretty wild ride anyhow.

Used tires and gasoline? That's a bit overboard, if you ask me. I didn't pay a lot of attention to thefuel used by Spaceship 1, but that's really something! It would have saved us from a bunch of pollution, in Ca., if they were using old tires for fuel. We had two big tire piles go up in smoke, out there, a few years ago, and it really made a mess of the air quality. One burned for over a month, it seemed, and you could smell burnt rubber, anywhere in the valley.

Yeah, I think it was actually nitrous (or a nitrous derivative) used as the oxidizer with the ground up rubber tires. No real hazmat (although once you lit the candle it was off to the races . It was amazing to watch the manual control of the "aircraft" as it left the lower atmosphere--at one point it was out of control and must've been a really wild ride. You could see the trim tabs moving as he fought to get it back under control, but I just remember thinking "wow" -- it did accomplish its intended task, though !
