I was in the recruiting center in Jacksonville, Florida and they had that song playing all day long - made me wonder if it was an omen about my re-upping into the Navy.....
My frigate did go thru a hurricane a couple years later - but WE came out of it okay.
I liked Gordon's songs.
"Cat's In The Cradle" - I always get the danged Chinese Restaurant version in my mind when I hear it.
I've done a lot of scuba diving in Lake Superior guys. That lake sure scares me. It's not a place for the inexperienced to be. Typically on a bright sunny day without a cloud in the sky a 20' high fog bank will suddenly surround your boat while the bright sun is above you...weird! Without a compass or GPS good luck. Take a look at my scuba photo link:
Like all of you I have a strong link to that song and remember hearing on the radio about the Fitzgerald missing. The bodies are still in the wreck. The water probably never gets above 45 degrees where they rest.
I was on Jones Island the day the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. That was her home port. Had done an inspection of the winter before, inspected to make sure that the heads holding tanks complied with the law, and they did. It was a very sad day for all the people on the island, I remember that I was in a commercial fishermans shed when the word was received and even Leland had tears in his eyes.
It is one of those songs that stay with you forever. A truly haunting memorial.
