Americans Cross Mexico Border in Search of Cheaper Gas...

More Americans are crossing the Mexican border, but it's not as tourists — it's to take advantage of that county's lower gasoline prices.

We're gonna end up with more Americans dead, or kidnapped, in Mexico!

When I was growing up in West Texas . . .

firms (if they had enough to mail) would cross the border at El Paso
then go to the main Post Office in Juarez. The stamps cost 3 cents each.
Then, by treaty, the Mexican postal system delivered the mail to the American postal system where it was sent on to the American recipients.
Sounds strange, but people and businesses did it. A friend of our family whose mother lived in El Paso told us she knew people who actually mailed their Christmas cards out of Juarez.

So, crossing into Mexico for something that you feel gives you an advantage is nothing new.

Except that it's way more dangerous, now. My family used to go fishing, in Ensenada, and my Dad always carried a pistol for self defence. That was many years ago, and all we had to worry about was the occasional bandido. These days, it's much more dangerous to cross the border into that mess, and you don't dare carry anything to defend yourself, or you end up in the local roach hotel, if the bad guys don't get you first. I got held up, at knifepoint, by five gangsters, a half mile from the crossing, at Del Rio, in '71. That's when I decided that Mexico was off limits for this ol' boy!!!

so, you are going to drive all the way to Mexico to get a tank of gas? This is nonesense. It did not matter if you live near the border, by the time you get home from Mexico, you probably end up spending more money on gas.

I go to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) several times a year and always gas up at the big Pemex station just before the border. That tank will get me home but thats all. Haven't had a problem with the Banditos or Federales but sure get a going over coming back into the USA, don't really mind that as it means they are doing their job.
Better have your passports out and it's yessir and nosir and outa there.

Money is so tight that you have to save where you can. For those living near the boarder it could amount to a real savings.

To TonyStewartFan . . .

The border with Texas is very long so many people can drive over
to Mexico then back home without burning much gas.

I used to be a mailman and had lots of "snowbirds" that went south for the winter. One particular "snowbird" was a mile or two from the Mexico border in Texas and he stated when he went into the UNITED STATES POSTAL FACILITY down there they flat out refused to talk to him unless it was in Spanish.

What's the skinny about English down there for you local residents close to Mexico and or elsewhere a heavy hispanic population is. Is it so bad we are now minorities in our own country?

To Killer

Actually, English is now a secondary language in fact if not in law
for many areas. Politicians are afraid to upset the Hispanic applecart (so to speak) of potential voters. Language could be the hot topic issue to send millions of Hispanics to the voting booths on a one issue plank.

So, language abuse is more common than you might think. It is sad for those children who will not enter the after high school world with the level of English proficiency needed for college and/or military and/or jobs in other regions of the country.

Therefore, what is happening in high density Hispanic areas will in the long run hurt rather than help the Hispanic population.

So, now we're having even more dollars go outside the country thanks to our energy policy ?

If you could tanker a hundred gallons or so, and the trip wasn't too long, this makes some sense (i.e. you've just saved $250 by a 30 minute drive). Wonder if you're supposed to "declare" the fuel ? Guess there's no way to really know if you have a huge aux fuel tank.

This isn't as dumb as you might think (as long as it's reasonably safe)--airliners sometimes "tanker" fuel between destinations (despite a significant fuel burn penalty for lifting the extra gas) to minimize fuel uplift at the higher fuel cost airports. The key is the amount of savings needs to offset all of the costs by enough to make it worthwhile.

Some stations are refusing to serve Americans? How's about we send our military in across their border and straighten up that Third World, P.O.S. country!
