Smile Old Movies

Since I'm getting close to retirement, I've started trying to collect old movies on DVD. So far, I've got The Enemy Below and The Dirty Dozen. I like old war movies. Where's a good place to look for good deals on old movies? Thanks!

P.S. What's your favorite old movie?

My favorite old movie is Ben Hur with Charlton Heston! I get all of my "old movies" from Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more

They seem to have good prices.

i collect old movies too.
and how i do it is get yourself an encyclopedia of the type of movies you want to collect.
for instance .
i use the
PSYCHOTRONIC VIDEO GUIDE

1001 MOVIES YOU MUST SEE BEFORE YOU DIE

and
VIDEOHOUNDS HORROR SHOW.

i recommend the 1001 encyclopedia to anyone with an interest in films of any type.

i use the same collecting techniques with film as i do with military rifles.
get some good books.
find out what is out there
decide what you want
and search for it.
then buy it!
but it is a heluva lot cheaper than buying guns!

war movies arent my forte but this thread is right up my alley.
i have about 800 horror films
from silent films up to this years offerings.
i also have a lot of 1st's
1st cartoon
1st vampire movie
1st cowboy
1st zombie
1st superman
1st sci fi
etc.
you get the idea.
keep me posted on how you go about your hobby.
maybe you will come up with ideas i havent yet.

Brother Bob, have you ever seen the "Final Countdown"? The USS Nimitz goes through a time storm and ends up a couple of days before Pearl Harbor. SciFi movie but it's a good one.

I collect movies as well as firearms. Right now I think I have between 9000 and 10,000 DVD VHS 16 MM and 8 MM movies.

I really like the old Castle 16mm films. They are funnier than most newer movies. Scrappy, Felix, Our Gang (the ones you will NEVER see on tv), Krazy Kat, there is a lot of others as well. They are mainly silent though. (E Bay).

I have a lot of horror as well. Most of the After Dark Series, Most of the Masters of Horror Series. Almost every Stephen King including non horror like Stand by Me, and The Green Mile. (Amazon and VHMsales.com).

I really like the well done or documentary type war movies. Band of Brothers and Saving Ryans Privates. The History Channels The War of 1812 was exceptionally good. I find the Movies like The Sands of Iwo Jima are not as good as the more documentary type Heros of Iwo Jima. But thats just my opinion. I get these mainly from Amazon.

I have a lot of comedies as well as the Drama or Chic Flicks. Have to have em ya know. Comedies I get everywhere and chic flicks I get a lot of these for free. I get a lot of free kids movies as well. I get about 80 free movies a month. I just have to go pick them up from people.

Then there are the B movie 50 packs. I have a lot of these. I get a kick out of some and some are just so bad you cant even watch em. It takes me about 2 months to watch a 50 pack. So thats a lot of movies for the money. The one I really liked was the Buster Keaton movie The General. If you like old movies or even if you dont you should watch that one. It comes in the 50 Classic Movie pack. For about $19. or you can get just that movie for about $10. to $15.

Amazon is easy to use and secure. They have a lot of out of print movies and books. You can usually get new for the price of used and almost always can purchase either. The worst thing is you pay $2.99 shipping on every item you order. If you order three items it is 3 x $2.99 = $8.97.
People are not so good on books with Amazon. If you are looking for collector type books they will a lot of times misrepresent the condition and quality of the book just to sell it. I have also recieved a different book than the one ordered many many times. Sorry just had to say that.

E-bay is pretty good for getting what you ordered. Usually there are a lot of whatever DVD or VHS movie your looking for. Not huge on the older or more rare movies though. But they have a lot of the Castle films. Im not a big fan of guessing if your going to win it on the auction or not.

Vhmsales have a huge catalog. They have a lot of hard to find movies. They sometimes have 1 cent sales. You just pay shipping. Thats how I got the complete Lucky Luke series. Remember the My Name is Trinity? He had a TV show as well. Shipping is on combined orders so you only pay one shipping price. Some movies are more expensive than you pay at Amazon.

Of course Target KMart and WalMart have sales on closeout movies and some older movies.

I just shopped around an got the entire Adventures of Superman TV shows starring George Reeves from E-bay.

There are lots of other places as well but these I have used the most.

Bob, the place that I've found with the most movies at the most reasonable prices is Deep Discount DVD, here:

www.DeepDiscount.com ®- DVDs, Blu-ray, HD DVD, CDs, Books, Video Games and more

Sign up for their email list and you will get notification of special sales and coupons. They have discounted movies regularly, and sometimes they are STEEP discounts. For instance, last year they had a buy one, get one free on selected TV series. We wound up buying the complete run of The X-Files for a total of about $150. That's I think ten seasons. If you went to buy them in a video store, $150 would by you maybe 3 seasons, if you were lucky. It bought us the entire run. I've bought plenty of classic movies from them for $10 or less, and I'm not talking B-pix no one ever heard of. I'm talking about Casablanca, The Greatest Show on Earth, Up Periscope, Twelve O'Clock High, Bringing Up Baby, Holiday, The Phiadelphia Story, Dracula, Frankenstein, It's A Wonderful Life, and heaven knows how many more (we have a huge DVD collection, well over 50 lineal feet of shelf space). I'll look at Amazon first, then Deep Discount. 99 times out of 100, Deep Discount costs less. And these aren't bootlegs or Chinese pirate copies I'm talking about; they're the real thing, real studio DVDs in the original wrap. It doesn't get any better.

They have plenty of movies well worth watching under $10, and a button where you can select for just those. It's a big help when you are building your library. Going off on a tangent for a minute, remember that Cinemascope (I.e., widescreen) didn't come in until 1953. So any movie with a 1952 or earlier release date will be fullscreen. Those are okay to buy in fullscreen versions. But for 1953 and later, get ONLY widescreen versions unless no widescreen version was released on DVD. That way, you'll get the movie the director shot, not what some tech thought was important enough to 'pan & scan,' a process that amounts to recutting the picture and robs you of much detail and richness.

And if you don't absolutely need it five minutes ago, Deep Discount even has free shipping! And free shipping is their default shipping method. Sites like Amazon don't, which means your DVD money goes farther. So give them a look-see. I'd bet you'll find a lot of what you want to watch for a lot less than you expect to pay.

You can find a lot of old movies at Wal Mart but you have to dig for them.

My wife and I dugout McClintuck which is a John Wayne movie and watched it after lunch today.

Amazon has free shipping on every new video. But it usually costs a little more than a lot of the others listed and it does take a little longer to get. But they are taking less than 2 weeks now for shipping. You also have to have a certain dollar amount in qualified merchandise to get the free shipping.

Always great to look around for a good deal. I was looking for CSI season 6. Its on sale at Target for $45. its $60.49 at Deep Discounts and its $34.99 at Amazon. Im always looking for a good discount.

I remember this--Dan-o was the frazzled fire control officer. Good flick.

They re-released The High and the Mighty. That one, The Longest Day, Citizen Kane, and Blazing Saddles are some of my favorites. Also liked James Stewart in Harvey and Rear Window. Haven't maybe gotten great deals, but found alot on Amazon or at Barnes and Noble.

SPOILER ALERT

Yes! A young ensign Dan-oh from Hawaii 5-0 after being up for two days with his finger on the button, responding to Widmark saying "Don't worry, we won't fire one unless the sub fires one"

"Fire one sir" Kaboosh. Both ships kill each other with tactical nukes. Great ending.
