Could Atom Smasher DOOM the Earth? [NEWS Link Inside]

Scientists have come up with a machine which will help them find Dark Matter and Dark Energy. Perhaps some Anti-Matter. Critics say this is a risk of creating something which is not meant to be created.

There was a movie based around this machine, I forget what it was, I think it was one of those Sci-Fi specials. But, some Electro-magnetic super-creature came from the alternate dimension. Was kinda hoaky (obviously), but seemed plausible in some ways.

I think I already saw an article debunking that it could destroy the earth.

I'd say about as much of a chance as the first A-Bomb setting the atmosphere ablaze when it was detonated at the Trinity Site in Alamogordo, or of CO2 produced by man causing Global Warming.

Doubt it. Kinda tough call when scientists are so right about some things, and so wrong about others.

This may explore new energy sources and potential propulsion devices, though.

Before the airplane was perfected they said god would destroy the earth because he would be mad that man was trying to be better than god.
Before the first Atomic bomb test they were afraid the atom bomb would blow up the entire world.
Before the first hydrogen bomb test they were afraid it would light up all the air in the atmosphere and burn the world.
And any type of scientific advancement in the dark ages was witchcraft or heresay and the person would be hanged as a witch.
Happens every time.

Not saying it is evil or going to blow up the earth. Just some news to read. I am all for it. If it DOOMS the earth, I guess it was meant to be.

All science in this area has a risk factor.

If you read the history books of the Manhattan Project you will learn
several of the scientists put it at a 3% chance the atomic destruction
sequence would not stop but would continue to engulf the planet.
However, the opposing view felt it was just a matter of time before
Germany could explode their own a-bomb and the test went ahead.

This is not a project without potential risk. Matter as we know it
and anti-matter (opposite charge on electrons and protons) should
annihilate one another. Exactly how large the explosion (if it occurs) would be and what would come out of it in terms of radiation has never been finalized.

It is understood most of the universe is made of dark matter yet
the properties of dark matter also remain theoretical and it is unknown what would happen if it did occur in a confined space on earth.

The creation of even a very small black hole (ultra gravity) is open to speculation as to whether at a very small level it would dematerialize
or continue to suck in other matter and grow.

So, none of this is without risk. Yet if we could gain some type control over the greater forces of the universe the potential for energy production and perhaps other beneficial phenomena might just be awesome.

Imagine if we could control the degree and angle of a microsingularity...

This would be a great means of propulsion in space, as you could angle the pull toward something large, then in return pulling yourself to it. That would be cool.
