I'm not sure if it is a South FL thing or all over but all the ranges I have been to have big signs saying: "NO RAPID FIRE". They very strictly enforce this. The range I go to most, Ace's Indoor Range in Doral Part of Miami), sells and rents machine guns but insists on no rapid fire. Can anyone tell me why ranges don't allow rapid fire but will allow a machine gun to be shot?
The ranges in my area don't prohibit "rapid fire". It depends on the individual, I can empty a DA/SA pistol before the first the first empty hits the ground, but it has to be close to the berm so nothing goes over, It's done as a demo only to police academy classes and is potentialy unsafe. If I'm the RSO I wouldn't allow it, unless it was another instructor demo-ing it to the class.
My WAG, why it's posted on your ranges is probably because of the liability. What is considered "Rapid Fire" ? Emptying a Glock 17 in 2 seconds or 5 rounds in 10 seconds?

LOL Jersey I havnt heard WAG used in a long time. My WAG is that it is to stop people from trying to shoot faster than there skill level, and it also gives a reason to eject an idiot. We have all seen the bullet holes in the ceiling just in front of the booths.
I was in a range in Kalamazoo,Mi. when a harmless looking lady cut loose with a hc 9mm and encouraged everyone to take cover as best as possible. When asked about it she said her and her husband often shot in a gravel pit and that was the method he had taught her.All I could think was,'I hope that gravel pit is deep and there are no houses nearby.Scarry,I say, really scarry! sam.
Most gov't ranges (Floirda Fish & Wildlife run) have the 2-second rule in place. I don't know WHY, I just know they want it that way. Probably some odd insurance regs...
Private ranges get to play around a bit more...when I practice SASS I really can't go to the Gov't Range in Pace...I'm going a whole lot faster than one shot per 2 seconds...so I would go to the ERML range in Pensacola (Private Gun Club) or out to the deep woods in my favorite holler where NOBODY can complain...

their point is, if its not meant to be shot very fast, dont try, they dont want holes in their ceiling
all but one of the indoor ranges i have been to have jerks working behind the counter though, i dont get it, every other gun related employee everywhere (except for these two vender's i always see at the gun shows)
Our range thinks of it as more of a safety issue. They don't mind double taps or rapid controlled fire; they just don't want someone randomly going blam blam blam blam and hitting baffles, frames, etc by doing something stupid. Pretty good about it overall--if they see someone doing something they shouldn't they talk to them and that's usually the end of the matter.

Looks like the common answer is safety which makes sense. There is no such thing as having too many safety rules. The part that still doesn't make sense is the range I go to most will rent a machine gun to anyone with money in their hand and that's not a safety issue.
Here in Tucson we have the "Rod and Gun Club" a "non profit organization" who will soon shut down my "spot" because of trash and other problems out on our Public Trust Land.
They are not going to be "non profit" once they start charging fees to shoot.
They are also taking away my spot that I have shot at since I was seven.
Yes, the trash and other problems suck, but it is still in the public trust.
I say Death to all Outdoor Ranges....If you can't drive 20 miles outside of town and shoot responsibly in a clearing 2 miles away from houses and people...I say you need to re-evaluate where you live.
Nobody has ever told me how I can shoot, and nobody will ever charge me to shoot my guns in a free Country, and now I have to go 30 miles further just so I can unleash my AK and SKS drum mags..
As I have staed here before my last range visit ended with me leaving because a "Semper Fi" emblazoned "Marine" kept on pointing his barrel at me and others causing the RM to scream Holy Hell into a microphone at him..I left because I cannot trust ANYONE with my safety but myself.
You dont know how much experience that bloke next to you has...I don't just go shooting with anyone and I don't just "shoot" next to anyone.
Outdoor ranges take away from my shooting experience and soon my experiences will be without the places I grew up shooting at. And my son's shooting experiences will now be at a less suitable spot 20-30 miles further out.
Long live rapid fire..

That doesn't sound like a place where I would like to shoot.
Yes, rapid fire is considered a safety issue at my local indoor range. Rapid fire is harder to control and a novice may scatter shots all across the range.

I myself get nothing out of spray&pray but others love it.There are places people can go and be safe.A bullet, once it looses stability and turns sideways doesn't go far and doesn't have much power but none the less should not be under estimated. Most ranges can't risk the huge responsibility and liability.I would try to find some place where I could shoot with reasonable caution and safety precautions. You may still have to pay, unless you buy/own the land, and in that case, you really pay. sam.
The indoor private range here is pretty strict on rapid shots bt the outdoor WMA range doesn't even have a RM, so pretty much anything goes. There are a group of guys that all have class 3 weapons and every so often they go out and just blast away at the burm.
