Refinishing of laminated stock

I just picked up a Russian M44 with a laminated stock. No major dings but some finish wear on the stock. Has anyone refinished one of these stocks? I am concerned about steaming some small marks out. It looks like a shellac finish.
TIA, Ron

I did my russian tula -- absolutely gorgeous--tiger eye look. Stripped it, sanded and applied several coats of Tru-Oil, steel wool in between coats.
