Any Rock Hounds or Amateur Geologists?

I have been collecting and hoarding rocks since I was 9 years old.
My son is a true rock hound and has found some of our biggest scores.

I frequent a place that has a plethora of rocks.

A week ago I found a small quartz outcropping and was suprised to see a Light green/Blue powdery "rock" connected with it.
I pulled some out and saw that as the green got closer to the quartz it really solidified into what looks like Green Quartz. I don't think it is but its is Green and it is growing into the quartz..so I guess technically it is Green Quartz, but not to the variety I think it belongs.

I looked at some of my books and it looks exactly like a unstablilized Turquoise in the raw...But I can't be sure. I'm hoping there are some Rock Men who can help me..

In this area I have found Blue Azurite, Malachite, Chrysacolla and tons of incredible Crystal Quartz pieces. Some of the Quartz is Potassium enriched (my opinion) and it is like a red quartz..really beautiful.

The first 2 pics are of the Green/Blue powdery rock, you can see the Quartz sticking out on the right. If it's Turquoise, I have hit the mother lode..
The other pics are of rock scores that I have found all within 200 yards of eachother. Photos of more rocks are in my albums..

There is a local Geologist who owns a rock shop here in town...He's an A-Hole, I have brought 2 finds to see what they were only to have him try to sell me books and then tell me appraisals and identification costs $10.00..none of my books really shows me in detailed color what raw Turq. is..but that one picture kinda looks like it..

So if anyone has any idea as to what the "greenish/bluish" rock might be, I'd appreciate it..

Burke, interesting photos there, I had (still do) an interest in rock hounding as a possible hobby for when I retired, now that my health has forced me to retire, I've had to put it on the back burner. Check some of the many rockhounding sites on the internet; I'm sure there is an expert that could help you. Just don't give out the location of your find untill you file a claim. You might have a big turquoise deposit there. Good luck and keep us posted on this, it is interesting.

Sorry i don't know what it is but it looks like Turquoise. I had taken some rocks of mine that where from the North West Wyoming Mountain area to a local college. The Geologist said immediately that it was Oceanic Crustaceans. He also said that he would further examine the rock that i had wet saw cut in half and would give me a full detail report for free. That was a great thing that he did, so maybe your local college will do the same for your find. Good luck with that. This is probably illegal but i have found an old Indian tomahawk and several arrowheads in the mountains of Pennsylvania. I have had them since i was a kid. And treasure them every time i look at them. Good luck with your find! and thank you for the interesting subject.....

You might want to talk to SA. I think his wife does a lot of rock hunting.

She's the artist; I'm the rockhound/geologist.

Burke; hard to say without being able to view up close. From what I can see I think it will be hard to determine any physical properties such as Hardness or Streak due to sample size. It's a good guess that it could be a copper based mineral or any one of the "solution quartzes". Is the white stuff around it quartz?

PS If you have one throw a blacklight on it and see if it flouresces a different color. If it does then it will help narrow it down. More than likely this will be a waste of time.

I keep getting you confused with the Pediatrician I worked with. His wife is the one that's the geologist.

SA, the hardness on the MOHs scale would be 1 and it is a powder, I couldn't take any pieces bigger than egg w/o it breaking and powdering. It has black specs, perhaps (biotite?) They are hard and semi shiny.
The Quartz is plentiful in the area and the Green which snakes into it is very deep like Brazilian Quartz..
I'm about ready to take a class to educate myself better..I'll have to wait until the money queen drops by.
Thanks guys.
I've done 5000 online image and info searches and I can't find crap..
I will get my GF's camera and take some better pics of what I have.

billy, Wolfenite is my favorite, that deep color and square shapes are so incredible, I payed 30 bucks for a very nice square shingle of it..and that is about as big a pencil eraser.
