promoted....kinda

it's a pay raise, and apparently more responsibility, so I guess it's a promotion, but i'm not supervising anyone yet

as many of you know i've been working at wal mart pushing carts for too long now(since 5/26/07) so I asked what I could be besides cart pusher. the only other option is cashier because i'm not 18 yet, so I wasn't really excited about that, but my assistant manager overheard and told me he'd been wanting to talk to me about that. He said he's only been with the company for 3 years(he's been salaried for over a year) and told me what steps he thought I should take and he wanted to get me inside to take on more responsibility, so i thought about it over my lunch break and decided to switch to cashier. i start the 19th and we're going to work out a schedule tomorrow

Trust me, tippman...Walmart cashiers don't sit, any more than supermarket cashiers do.

Congratz, Cubbie. Not just on getting the promotion, but also on impressing someone enough for them to take an interest in helping your career along in the company.

Congrats

Do a good job and start asking how to become a department manager in an area such as sporting goods, home improvement, or auto supplies.
Then work toward an assistant managership for an entire store.

The easiest way to get out of a minimum wage job is to get a promotion with a raise.

good for you, let me tell you, its hard for us younger guys, we work harder sometimes than the ones who have been there for a while, when i was at kroger, i did everything it felt like, and the pay was bad......but you, you keep with it and good things are bound to happen

Cubbie, one bit of advice: get youself a pair or really comfortable sneakers and put some good insoles in them. You are going to be standing on a hard floor all day - those rubber mats they put at the cash registers are worthless for foot comfort - and that's harder on your feet than moving around.

I spent 16 years at sea walking on steel decks and pacing the bridge in leather shoes, and I never had foot trouble. After I'd been ashore awhile, I ended up supervising the plan room of a construction company, in the one room in the company that was not carpeted. The company refused to either carpet the space or allow me and my people to wear sneakers. Inside of six months, I had massive foot troubles and eventually had to have surgery. My heels still ache constantly as a result of that job. So learn from my example and pad your feet as far as possible if you're going to be standing on a hard surface all the time.

The more jobs at wal-mart you can learn and do will help you and the company. Do as many different jobs as you can and do them well, that promotion will be there.

Good job, man! My dad used to tell me "sitting on your ass doing nothing all day will only get you so far..." I respect anyone who tries to better his\her situation.

you have to be 21 to work in sporting goods, my store sells handguns. my manager had me help him build a feature back there yesterday, but to be job coded back there you have to be able to run the gun counter

also, I'll have a year and a half in the front end when i turn 18, i'll have a better shot at customer service manager then department manager, but who can complain about $13.20 with an extra dollar per hour in the summer and another extra dollar per hour on sundays to cashier?
