Ruger M77 Compact question

I have a Ruger M77 Comact, SS w Laminated stock, in .260 Rem.

As you can see if you look at the pic, the laminated stock has checkering. I recently noticed that all the Compacts I've seen in stores, and also on the RUger website, have smooth stocks on the laminated ones, but checkering on the walnut stocks. The Frontier rifles, however, have checkering on the laminated stocks.

Anyone else out there have checkering on a laminated Compact? Any idea how I got one with checkering? Just lucky?

(I bought mine NIB from a dealer, but at a gun show in Tennessee.)

In case anyone is interested, I got a reply from Ruger, saying that the original laminated Compact stocks had no checkering, but the new ones do. So if you see one without checkering, it's been "in stock" for awhile.
