San Fran's next step: Legalized prostitution?

City to vote on ballot measure D.A. calls 'welcome mat for prostitutes and pimps'....

Petitioners have succeeded in moving a measure that would effectively decriminalize prostitution in the city of San Francisco to the Nov. 4 ballot.

San Fran's next step: Legalized prostitution?

Groan . . . .

It used to be a wonderful city. Now it is a symbol of decay.
Sad for all the good people who once lived and still live there.

This will be a message to young people that this type lifestyle is
sanctioned therefore inviting new people into the ranks. So,
there will be more of it licensed or not. Despite the verbal plans
of whores, how many actually save money for college or their
own mainstream business? How many people have come out of
whoredom or pimpdom to make a contribution to society?
How many people in prison for non-whoring crimes have been
involved in prostitution?

I believe the Bible is correct in its denounciation of whoredom.

Makes perfect sense to me. Legalized, regulated prostitutes and red-light districts are a lot easier to control and keep a lid on than illegal streetwalkers. Safer for the customers and the hookers both, with less crime and less exploitation.

Do the hookers get to take it off their income tax when a john busts 'em up? What if they get , uh.."stiffed" on a job? I'm sorry, Lord, I shouldn't have said that, please don't strike me down until I pay off my wifes' car..

Let's face it, you can't stop it so you may as well legitimise it and tax it!

Well, they're a lot less likely to get busted up by a customer if they aren't hiding in the shadows somewhere away from the law...I'm not going anywhere near your other question.

It's worked for Vegas and Amsterdam. San Fran is just a modern day Sodom and Gamora anyhow.

I don't know if this is possible

San Fran actually coming up with a good idea for a change ?

This works in many other parts of the world, and has been around since the beginning of time.

Maybe, with the DC decision, the hookers will be packing too--that'll help keep 'em safe.

Ok, that's fine. Now we can set up, yet another government agency to oversee the prostitutes health records, payroll, etc. all at the tax-payers expense! Don't you folks in California already pay high enough taxes? Ban lead bullets and legalize prostitution ......... I swear there's something in they're drinking water!

Actually, prostitution is not legal in Las Vegas. You have to go outside of Clark County if you want to find a brothel. Not to say that there isn't prostitution in Vegas.

It's legal in Germany and controlled by the government. They get medical exams regularly and you can find some very interesting talent in the brothels.

It is already Sanctioned by almost every city & town in the world, albeit unofficially so why not legalise & tax.

And that would cost more than what it costs to keep it illegal and deal with it as a crime? I don't think so...

Not that they've gotten anywhere close to that yet...they've just 'decriminalized' it so far.

This whole 'message' thing gets totally out of hand. I remember back when the Texas Board of Education was demanding that textbook publishers stop any use of the word 'drug' when teaching the history of medicine, because somehow it was sending the wrong message to young people.

I believe we need to stop passing or enforcing laws based on whether not they send some kind of nebulous 'message.' The fact (or belief) that something is wrong or immoral isn't reason enough to make it a crime, and everything that's wrong can't be fixed with police, judges and jails. Nor does the simple fact that something is legal mean it's sanctioned.

Otherwise, I'd be pushing for laws to bar fat chicks from wearing tube tops and Spandex pants, on the grounds that not making it illegal sanctions their behavior...

Doesn't have to be at the taxpayer expense, can come out of a brothel license fee. There's some justification from a market perspective for regulation--externalities and asymmetric information (wouldn't want to be "surprised" by a licensee....).

Maybe I could moonlight as an "inspector" !
