Wolf Brass for 7.62x54r

OK, so I am looking to hand load some hunting cartriges. California black tail and hog.

I'm shooting a Mosin m44 with a 2.5x scout mount scope.

I don't need super accurate target precision, but hunting accuracy at 100 or so yards so I'm not interested in spending a ton for brass.

Wolf Gold or the OEM manufacturer of that ammo Prvi Partizan both have reloadable ammo in the close to $.50/round range.

Have people here had success reloading this brass?

Can you get the Wolf Gold cases without it being loaded? Too bad it looks like Smokewagon Gear ran out of their JMS brass cased boxer primed already loaded for $.25 a round. Glad I scarfed up a bunch while they had them.

But a lot of milsurp is still cheaper than reloading it.

As long as you use moderate loads(which is best anyway),if you had 40 loaded cases and used them and started reloading, you could expect around 10 reloads for each case,or about 400rnds.The surplus that is marked reloadable might not last that long because it is heavier and less flexible.I would either order new brass or buy two boxes of American made ammo. sam.

I agree with Sam. Just buy 40 rds of commercial hunting ammo and go from there. Hey, by the way, WELCOME to G&G BB !! Where do you hunt hog at ??

Part of the fun of having a milsurp rifle and a buddy with a reloading press is working up the exact round for my rifle. Gets me to the range more than buying commercial ammo. It is not an economic thing per se, but a fun thing, although I would like to do it fairly cheaply.

ETA: I guess I didn't understand at first what you wrote. Yes, I could get a couple of boxes of winchester, but Wolf Gold (and the OEM) are brand new made hunting loads, not milsurp and cost about half as much.

Right now, and I admit it, I haven't hunted since I was 16. Just starting to get back into it. I'm in the north part of californias central valley (Chico, CA).

Ok, so I just ordered 40 rounds of the Prvi Partizan ammo. I can't find any ammo in this caliber locally at all no matter what brand, so I got it off the web.

About 33 bucks shipped. Kind of expensive shipping, but oh well.

Anyway, there is a great reloading shop near the range I shoot at, so after I go and get my brass by shooting this ammo, I am gonna get my dies and bullets and powder.

This weekend I am going to slug my barrel and figure what bullet diameter I want.

Moving right along.....

You know you might also check for 7.62X53Rmm, it's the same round.

OK, just different nomenclature. Weird, I've only seen 7.62x54r on any commercial packaging. I've never seen it called 7.62x54Rmm.

Yeah. all my Mosins are more than .308 so I use the 303 British bullets sized .0311-0.312".

Just got an email from Terry at Smokewagon Gear. I asked him if he was all out of the JMS loaded 7.62X54R. He said he's sold 250,000 rounds of this stuff in the last 6 months. He also said nudge nudge wink wink, I'll see if I can scrounge you up a few more bags he may still have laying around. He also says he's talking to the vender to get restocked, so there still may be hope he'll have some more for sale.

250,000 rounds....WHEW!

BB, also take a look at Sellier and Beloit ammo-it's reloadable as well and the brass is pretty decent without the crimp marks on the mouth like the Wolf\Prvi stuff. I buy my brass from Graf & Sons - The Reloading Authority, but it's really gone up in the last few years. I think I paid $28.00\100 rds a couple of years ago.

I'm tumbling a bunch of that JMS brass now from it's first reloading. The brass worked good, no splits or anything.
