Female hiker killed by bear hunter

I just read on Seattle web site that a female hiker has been shot by a bear hunter. This is just a dreadful mistake.

Not much detail. Do you have a link? Is that all it said? Is it a regular news website or some guy's blog?

How the heck do you mistake a human female for a bear?

Thanks Neo, I lost the link I was so blown by the news I hit the wrong key. How do we help? Is it even appropriate. Why .. are those two areas even close to each other? Pray for the families.

Why not? If you closed all hunting areas to hikers and/or all hiking areas to hunters, idiots would still shoot other hunters.

The problem is not that the hiker shouldn't have been there or the hunter shouldn't have been there; the problem is a fool pulled the trigger without knowing what he was shooting at.

I don't think it's wise to put hikers and hunters in the same area at the same time. I do believe that it's the responsibility of the hunter, being the one with a deadly weapon, to make absolutely sure of what he's doing, shooting at. I hate to pass judgment on anyone for making a mistake but the fault falls on to the hunter. A hiker is safer in the wilderness than driving to the wilderness BUT one accident is one to many.
BTW, Texas Parks & Wildlife closes any park, wilderness area or wildlife refuge to any other activity when they have hunts. Sounds smart to me.

Many years ago, a good friend's 12y.o. little brother was shot and killed while walking his dog. They lived in the country (central Michigan), and it was just after dusk. They surmise that someone was spotlighting for deer, and mistook the reflection from his glasses for a deer looking at them. He was found on a footpath though the brush just off the road near his house, where he always walked the dog. The dog went home to get help.

The story said it was a 14 year old boy who did the shooting. The hiker was bent over putting something in her backpack. My prayers to both families.

This was a tragic incident indeed.

And, it reminds me of the importance to always, always, always identify your target...and be very aware of what is behind the target.

I think the kid just had bear fever and was so anxious to shoot, he didn't take enough time to confirm his target? I also don't think 14 is old enough to be left alone with a firearm. It does seem as if it were an accident, but an accident that wouldn't of happened had this CHILD had an adult with him making sure what he was about to shoot, was indeed a bear.

And it may be a popular hiking spot, but they should close it off to hikers during certain times for hunting. I mean, when wildfires are near a popular camping spot or resort, they make people leave and don't let them in for their own good right. Same thing here. For their own good, maybe not let people hike or do what ever else they might do in this area during hunting season. I mean, it isn't as if there's NO WHERE ELSE THE PEOPLE THAT WANT TO HIKE CAN HIKE RIGHT???

I hunt public land and private land and people always cut through while hiking. I've never drawn down on another human being thinking them to be game.

... which is why I do not hunt anymore... too many novice's with guns in the woods... that shoot at noise or not properly identifying their target and what is beyond it.

A sad, tragic accident. It will haunt both families, for years to come. I've hunted in some remote areas, and still found other folks around, so I've always been careful to identify the target, before placing finger on trigger.

being 14 years old and possessing a legal hunting license is not license to shoot at movement or noise. One must also have identified the target positively not just beyond a reasonable doubt. As tated in an above post "I think the kid had bear fever and was anxious to shoot---" does not absolve the "kid" from responsability for his action. I don't say the he should be prosecuted in a court of law for this as he has to live with this fact for the rest of his life. But by the Almighty----!
