I mailed my application for my C&R yesterday so now Im looking at different places to purchase my 91/30. (can't wait!!!!)
I like the looks of J&G and almost all the reviews for the 91/30 were good. They also seem to have the lowest prices.
But I am wondering if anyone here has any experience with buying from them?
Thanks!!
They have a pretty good track record; I don't remember anyone ever really complaining about them. I drove over to buy some ammo a couple of months ago, and was seriously wishing California residents could buy guns in Arizona.
The guys behind the counter seemed to be friendly and knowledgeable. While I was there, one of them was quietly and patiently trying to switch an elderly lady off the hand cannon her husband wanted her to carry, onto something she might actually be able to shoot. That was in spite of the fact that the alternatives he was showing her were considerably cheaper.
I bought my 91/30 from them a month or so back, before they had as many options as they now do (they only advertised hex receivers, and had no mention or options to purchase round receivers or the "sniper" version).
So I ordered one. Nine or so days later, I got my rifle.
Problem was, the rifle I received had a round receiver - not what wad advertised, and not what I had paid for.
I would have sent it back, but it was a real straight shooter and I'd hate to get rid of a good shooter and risk getting a poor one. Because accuracy is more important to me than aesthetics, I was not disappointed.
In the future though, I would be very unlikely to purchase one that I couldn't physically inspect beforehand (which has more to do with web sales than J & G in particular).
I think J & G is overall a good place, and in Troy's case, being able to actually visit their building would be a great pleasure.
My only suggestion would be to be very specific with your order - though they have the option to select round and hex now, so it should avoid any troubles.
Well thinking back on it, I'd also suggest not buying their "sniper" version. It says it may or may not have the actual ex-sniper markings, which means you may very well pay $450+ for a pie-plate accuracy infantry rifle with a modern-made unauthentic scope and mount system. This would be a fair price for a true ex-sniper rifle...but its not worth the risk to pay that kind of money and get a $70 infantry rifle with a fake PU scope. If such a knock-off is what you really wanted, you could do it yourself for under $250.

every military surplus store i have been to around here has a plethora of them behind the counter for sale, good prices, and you can visually inspect them

I have purchased 7 or 8 guns through J&G now and have always had great service. I did run into one gentleman when I was there who didn't provide the most friendly service and was a bit of a gun snob. Gave me a hard time for buying a PA-63 since he said it was just a cheap gun that wouldn't last. . Well, how could I resist ANY gun for 99 dollars! Haha! That has been the only thing I have run into there that left a bad taste in my mouth. I have been back several times since then and never seen him around again. I have only spoken to them on the phone twice now, but the guy I talked to, Mike I believe, was extremely friendly and went above and beyond to find out about what I called on. And it wasn't even something they were going to make a bunch of money on. Just a cheapo SA .22lr revolver that was marked as a gunsmith special due to a missing rear sight for 50 bucks. Overall, I have ALWAYS been more than satisfied with the customer service, prices, and selection. Now, like I said, I have never ordered from them over the net, but in-store they have been great to me.

I've nothing but good things to say about them. One of these day's I'll have to visit the store. It's only a 2 hour drive from where I live.

I purchased three rifles, some ammo, and a bayonet there over the 4th of July holiday and Ronnie (the guy who helped me) was probably one of the NICEST guys I've ever dealt with.
The staff is knowledgeable, the selection superb, and the prices very reasonable

I would like to go there in person but even though I have no idea where they are located, Im sure its far from here.(everything is). As soon as the C&R fairy brings my little magic piece of paper I will be ordering from them online.

Prescott, Arizona. Up in the wooded mountains, not the desert. A nice old town in its own right, even if J & G didn't give people an excuse to head up there.
Troy2000 is so right when he said "A nice old town in it's own right, even if J&G didn't give people an excuse to go up there."
I lived in Prescott for a year and a half while working at one of the guest camps there. It is a great place to visit. It is situated in a beautiful mountain valley at 5368 ft elev. It was the capitol of the Arizona territory in the 1800s and has a rich "old west history". In the center of town is the Courthouse Square with the original courthouse(still used for city offices) from the cowboy era. The courthouse square is lined with huge old cottonwood and hardwood trees. The streets surrounding the square where the saloons and "entertainment houses" used to be now are home to pubs, antique and curio shops, cafes, and fine dining. The Courthouse Square also hosts outdoor evening movies, bluegrass festivals, plays and art shows. The landscape that encompasses town is just as nice. Thumb Butte looks over the town and makes a great half day hike with great views. Watson Lake with it's picturesque granite dells and Lynx lake are only a couple of miles outside of town. This area is also home to one of the largest Apache tribes, the Yavapai. Animals and game around the area include, Pronghorn Antelope, Deer, Mountain Lion, Bighorn, Javalina, Bald Eagles, gamebirds, waterfowl, etc.
Firearms play a significant role in the area as well; not only the old west history but one of Ruger's main manufacturing and distribution plants is there. The late Jeff Cooper's firearms training facility, "Gunsite" is located in Paulden, AZ about 15 miles down the road. Not to Mention J&G Sales is there.
The area is most certainly worth traveling to. I wish I hadn't had to move away from there.
Welcome aboard glocks! Mind if I ask what guest camp that was? A beatiful area for sure.
Interestomgfact about the Courthouse, most of you have probably seen it! If you remember in back to the future the clock tower that Doc was electocuted on and fell off of, then you have seen it! That clock is on one side of the courthouse.
