I have one that belonged to my Dad when he was in Nam. I have used it for nostalgia sake. A good shave, but rough conpared to modern razors. My grandpa was a braber and used a straight. I'm a modern wimpo and use electric. Too lazy I guess. It kills me when I go overseas and have voltage issues, got to revert back to the blade.

I use the single-edge disposables. They're easy to clean, and last for a couple weeks if I don't let the stuff grow too deep. Also, I'm a cheap SOB.

Bigdogi get the disposables at the dollar stores. i was just thinking back to the good old days. when that double edge blade got dull, i'd flip it over and was good for a couple more weeks!!!

Any one remember the little slots in the old medicine cabinets that you dumped the old used blades in? The blades just filled up the inside of the wall.

I remember those slots, but never knew what they were for! Amazing what you can learn on the Internet. My mother uses an old metal double-edge razor for her legs, and Dad used one til recent years. When I statred shaving, I tried one but couldn't get used to it. I prefer the disposables. Maybe they'll become "collectible antiques" one day.

Hey...I've used double edge razor blades for years to give myself stylish haircuts. Just slip three of them into a plastic type comb cutter and comb away.:jaw: Gives me a "bowl" shape haircut just like the guy on the three stooges. When I get old enough my wife will start taking me to real barbers.

I replaced mine here http://www.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/conk/merkur.html but I still find myself using the old Shick held together with a bent pin. |

I can get over three months out of a double edged disposable. I shave in the shower using just plain old bar soap (wash my hair with the same stuff too). I bought a pack of razors from Costco about 8 years ago...still working on it. I don't throw them out until I see folicles...

I used a straight razor for years, until someone stole it. I bought it cheap from an old barber. Apparently the blade had been broken; it was shorter than the slot and the end was very roughly reground. I bought another one new after losing the first, but never could get it to keep a decent edge. Maybe I should look up another old barber.

No doubt that my razor comb has saved me several hundred dollars over the past 30 years. If barbers charge $12 per haircut X 12/year X 30 years that equals $4,320. WOW:jaw: Didn't know I'd saved that much. Guess I should buy a new gun with that kind of savings.

| I been using a Gillette Sensor since they hit the market...not going to change..my dad's the same way with his straight razor that he sharpens with a horsehide strop..I wouldn't trust myself with a straight razor..wish I could shave with one..used to watch my grampa shave with one when dad was in Viet Nam |

I always wanted to try a straight razor, but I pass out at the sight of my own blood. Your blood doesn't bother me, just my own for some reason.

| Resident Armed Liberal ![]() | Straight razors are easy to use. Quote:
Even a safety razor will cut you, if you go the direction of the blade instead of across it. And for some reason I was always more focused using a straight razor. I don't remember ever getting a worse nick from one of them than from a double-edged one. And they're great for trimmming mustaches and sideburns.

The bigest problems with the modern Straight razors is the Steel. ya cant get the good steel The "razor steel" was easily sharpened with a strop and canvass and if need be could be dressed with the old razor stones That was back when one measure of a civilized man was how well he could sharpen an edge, and keep himself clean shaven. Now a days most concider it too Hard to keep a Razor sharp. the old double edge "safety" razors where good What I liked about those was the hand made mecanical nature of those things. I have to admit I use disposables now too.... The best shaves I have ever recieved where in a barber shop with old straight razors, done by a old man that knew his business and was proud of his skill. Ya just dont see that very much any more.

Man I wish I could even use any kind of razor. I switched to an electric and then tried to go back to the razor because they shaved closer. after the 3rd cheese graded face I just gave it up. Soap, hot water, shave cream, differen razor...nothin helped. My face never felt as bad as that did...

I'm with Ox on this. I can count on one hand the number of times I have been to a barber. Mom cut my hair as a kid, now I cut my own hair. as for shaving. I tried my grandfathers straight razor, the cut was nice, but it takes me quite a bit longer. I use a mach3 and its been about 4 years since I have bought replacement blades for it and I still have 2 left.
