so another day in the high country last week. just treking back to camp. i was scouting for my elk that im gonna take with my custom mosin.thats another story though. as i found my self 200 yards from camp i heard a rustle about 15 yards in thick brush. i thought of it as nothing until i heard a thick snap of a branch. i drew my glock 17. at this point i seen the cougar.what a fricken big kitty.i fired 5 rounds into the ground pretty close to it. that cat scat but i was lucky that i heard it coming. i know i could take it with a 9mm.of coarse multiple rounds. but having momma bears and mountain lions all around. i need a 44mag. i want the most basic 4" or under. good pack gun. im just looking at a good price. any thoughtsl

S&W 629? not sure if they are 4" though. Down at the farm a rossi coach gun is always close by. But a 44 in a good hip holster is good defence against critters.
you are gonna get everybodys personal choice on the best carry gun, so I'll throw a couple ideas at ya, if you really like your glock why not stay with the glock family and pick up a 10mm or if you have got to have a 44 then go hang out at the gun store and fondle all of them and see what feels best to you, my carry 44 is the taurus m44.
good luck and great job with the big cat.
Ruger Redhawk 44 mag in stainless steel is a good double action trail gun/pack gun, and it can be had new for about $589. here in the Tampa Bay area and used for even less. Here's a link to its specs. Ruger Redhawk®*Double Action*Revolvers
The Ruger Alaskan 2.5" barrel is also available, I thinks its a little more pricy though.
Good luck with your search.

Apparently we have wolves at my parents cabin. And they finally saw a bear a couple weeks ago. I'm pretty sure I'll be bringing my security six the next time I go. (If I can get my stupid signitures to get my permit and free it from the store first that is. I just moved over the county line and know very few people who live in this county other than some from college I'm tracking down)
thanks fellas, i think im gonna go with the redhawk 4'. wouldnt mind picking up a used one. six shooters stay in fairly great shape with extreme use but its the owner too.

I would think coyotes are far more likely than actual timber wolves. Check with your local game warden. If it is coyotes, you can probably hunt them year 'round. We can here in Ohio. Guys have a lot of fun trying to call them in and then get a shot before they know it's a setup. The pelts are worth a little bit, too.

Six Shooters last longer, but MOST shooters cannot fire them as quickly as a Glock 20 in 10MM...unless they practice a LOT and have a copy of "Fast & Fancy Pistol Shooting" by Ed McGivern to get to a .06 second interval between shots with a revolver...and I'm talking about a LOT of training.
A good .44, 45ACP, 10mm, or .50AE used with proper shot placement should keep one safe

I have been packing my glock 27, converted to 9mm. Not a great choice but better than nothing. Plus I am lucky enough to be in law enforcement and able to carry in commie NJ. I did put down a buck that charged me and my daughter going after a doe but it took 13 rds (last round was a headshot).
IF you are accurate then you don't need followup shots. Why do you think the military went to "automatice" pistols. The average guy isn't that good with handgun, so let's give him one that has lots of rounds.
RUGER MAKES A 4 5/8 BARRELIT MAY BE JUST WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR
A 44 MAG I GOPT ONE TO SHOOT 44 SPECALSIN BUT NOW I JUST LOAD THE MAGS DOWN AND I CAN STILL LOAD TO FULL POWER FOR HUNTINGBUT I NOW USE A SBH HUNTER IT RUNS 52 OZ THE 4 5/8 RUNS AROUND 42 OZ FOR CARRING I LIKE THE
