I have two minature daschschunds who are the most yapping dogs I have ever owned! They bark at anything! My blue heeler/australian shepherd is more territorial and is loyal to us, especially to my son.

I have an Akita Inu. Akita Information and Pictures, Akitas

She does really, really well with the kid and tolerates the wife. Akitas aren't for everybody. But if you have one, you can sleep with the doors unlocked.

Labrador retriever's suppost to be a very good family dog plus watch dog.I would read about the breed first to make sure it's the right fit for you and the family...Good luck on finding your new family member.

Used to have a standard Red Daschund that was a great watchdog, barked on the hour, every hour, nobody could get near the house. It was also great at dealing with intruders, brought them to their knees in no time at all, they tripped over it! (It was also the worst ball sniffer we ever had!!!)

I grew up around Dobermans. They are better with small children than many people think, and are amazingly protective of their family. They're good around kids because they aren't a "rough" dog. They tend to be measured and careful, by and large, with the proper training.

They also have a reputation and, when a break-in is concerned, a dog that frightens a potential intruder is worth more than one who'll fight, most of the time. So Dobermans, German Shepherds, Mastiffs, the "Pitbull" trinity...all good choices.

I would vote for Boxers and German Shepherds for guard dogs. Boxers can be intimidating, but are usually very loyal dogs. Shepherds are excellent guard dogs. Both would do well with your kids, but Shepherds shed like mad. If you're not wanting to sweep up hair everyday, then it's not the one for you.

I have three bird dogs, a Brittney Spainel, German Short haired pointer, and a Weimaraner, all three are great with my three year old and 9 month old, and all sound mean behide the door but they are really push overs.I know they have startled a would-be intruder and it seems he did not want to tangle with mulitple animals. So they are a great help in home defense.

We've always had mutts. My last dog was a Terrior/Chihuahua mix with German Shepard coloring. Even at 15, people thought she was a GS puppy. Very loud bark for such a small dog, and she had fight in her to the last moments. She defended our home well for 15 years and saved my life at least twice. She was amazing with kids.

Lily is also a mutt, Beagle/Australian Shepard mix. She is insanely good with children, loves them like crazy and would spend every moment playing with them if she could. She'll even graciously stand there as they throw dirt at her and balance things on her nose. She's larger than Poochie (our first dog) by about 25 lbs. She has a good way of getting between anyone in the family and anyone in front of them, humans and animals alike. She's one strong dog, too. Lily is afraid of everything, literally, but she seems to lose all fear if she senses a threat to her family. The only thing stopping Lily from being a good home defense addition is that she had a stroke several months ago. She's very active and is still living a wonderful life and doing her best to be a defender, but more than half of her brain is gone and she can get lost in the kitchen. The stroke was due to a thyroid issue we were unaware that she had (the doctor just kept telling us she was fat and didn't want to hear she was active and on a strict diet until she had a stroke... then it was like, "Oh, it appears she has a thyroid problem") and she's on medication for that now, so it makes her ungodly hungry all the time. Most of her day revolves around finding food, so she is preoccupied now, too, which doesn't help. I've walked into the house and snuck up on her trying to pry open the pantry door (where her treats are) and she never heard me come in. If not for all that, she'd be a wonderful defense dog.

A border collie/mixed dog. Not too big. Always on alert. Barks when necessary. Will bond with your child. Ours lived 14 years. Everytime you looked at him, he was always looking at you. I always wondered if he ever slept.
The best thing about this dog is he actually attacked my mother-in-law when she came to our house late one night, drunk as usual, and scared our daughter. I'll always love that dog for that night alone.LOL

I've had purebred dogs that were great dogs, but the terrier mix I have now is far and away the best dog I've ever been friends with. He weighs twenty pounds, and thinks he's a giant. Nothing intimidates this dog, except the sound of a firearm being operated. I found the fella at a VFW hall in Ca., he was flea and tick infested and weighed about nine pounds. When the caretaker saw me scratching his head, I was told that I had to take him with me. It seems he bit everyone who tried to touch him! Well, he bit me when I put him in the truck, and I told him I bit back, and we've been friends since! CGO posted a picture of him on the pet thread, so I won't put it here. Needless to say, I'll never be able to replace this guy when he's gone, the loyalty, and bonding is unbelievable. He's really a one man dog.

My Lab is old, but he still hears better than me. Anyone comes in the yard, he barks.
He loves kids! So if the BG's are midgets, I'm screwed!

I have a 115 lb Rottie that does an excellent job at home security. He is trained to follow voice AND silent hand commands without fail. He will allow someone into the house without making a peep... until he hears the door close. He (Zeus) is an integral part of my home security plan. He has also been trained to NOT eat from no one except family members. He is not afraid of gunfire.

He also happens to be a family pet. A gentle giant that loves kids. I purposefully exposed him to the worst brats I could find when he was a puppy. He will not harm a child or a woman. I cannot say the same for a strange man.

My dog "wags" is my #2 alarm, first being one of those MURS motion sensors. She's a sweetie but barks at everyone including the neighbor's! Even after 2.5 years at the same house! She'll bark like mad, then run like mad if they get too close - but all I need is that few seconds of warning.

Rat Terriers are pretty intimidating when they want to be. Except when I get the baby turkeys out. I have them under a heat lamp in the house for now. The little turkeys will chase the dogs and those fools run from them. These little 6" tall turkeys will even strut to spook the dogs. Hey, maybe I should just leave a turkey in the house, I hear they can be pretty nasty when they want to.

I have an american staffordshire bull terrier. I was lucky enough to come to his rescue, otherwise he would have been a training dog for fighting. I could not ask for a better dog. He is great as a pet, and loves people (that I bring in to the house). I think these dogs have a bad rep, seems like everyone takes awhile to get comfortable with him. He may lick you to death if he knows you, but I would hate to feel the wrath of his powerful bite if he didn't.
