Bolt action differences

Anyone know just what it is that makes a bolt action a Mauser action versus a non-Mauser styled action?

I know a lot of US guns have the commercial mauser style bolt actions but how do you differentiate between a Mauser action from one that isn't?

mauser actions that are based on Herr Mausers' m-98 design with some minor changes, or not, is a mauser. regardless of who made it, military or commecial. i think you are asking about difference between commercial and military actions. the military main feature is thumb cutout on the receiver wall, stripper guides on top of the rear receiver ring, three position wing saftey on bolt shroud. any one else???

Key features would be the 2 huge locking lugs, giant claw extractor, and the cocking system.

Papa and Klaus,

thanks a lot guys...just what I was looking for.

BTW, can one assume the Mauser type of action is a sturdier or the better of bolt actions?

IMHO not really, depends on what caliber is intended, and ultimate use of said rifle

Would that describe my Savage 111? Sounds like it. Only difference between it and my friend's K98 is that my safety is on the receiver while his is on the rear of the bolt, as is his Winchester 70's.

for all intensive purposes the mauser model 98 action is probably the best action in the world, the only one that comes close is the enfield.
Just about all the major sporting, hunting, ect. bolt actions are based of it in some manner, just look at the M1903 an exact copy of the mauser 98 action.

ohh i agree the enfield is a great action, but i don't think it's quite as good as the Mausers.

Yes the bolt is out of the gun I keep them in the safe that we the bolts don't scar the wood -- I have 26 coats of hand rubbed oil on this stock and one of my others a custom Nagant is at 19 coats so I don't want to kill a finish while in storage

Take a look at the Ruger M77 sometime. It's very similar to the Mauser. The only major difference is the safety (tang mounted on my early Varminter).
