The 40 definately adds some punch, but with +P, the 9mm is a great SD gun. And it's more economical at the range. You'll never really get THE best answer when it comes to caliber. BUT the best IMO is the .357sig

| Waiting for the XDm 9mm
My Taurus 85UL came back Friday. The dealer and I were disappointed they didn't replace it with a new gun. He told me to try it and if it failed, he would give me full credit toward something else and HE would deal with Taurus. Took the snubby to the range after work Friday and on round 8, she locked up tighter than Dick's hat band! There was a chunk of copper bullet coating so large that at first I thought the whole bullet was lodged in the barrel. After much effort with my trusty NRA knife, I got it open and out. The "sliver" was about 3/4 the size of my index fingernail!!! Soooooo, I'm taking the gun back Monday for him to deal with.
I played with the XD 40's again. I really like the Tactical. Great balance! BUT, I have decided to wait until the 9mm XDm's come out. Then I can make a fully-informed decision. I have always preferred 9mm and I just ordered 1,000 rounds of it!
I think tomorrow I'll get a shotgun....

I bought an additional XD last week, old style, for my wife...
...and, I bought the old style so that I will not have to wonder what is in my hand at o'dark thirty when the lights are out and I need to respond quickly.
Buying an old style XD for my wife, just like the one I use, also means my wife will not have to wonder what pistol she picked up when the time comes to act quickly...

| It all depends on what you want. There a lot if similarities between the two and differences as well. I like both and shoot both. The XDM in my opinion is the way to go. You have the capacity to shoot USPSA and can down load for IDPA. You can several divisions with this one pistol and be competitive. Here is a link to a site that can help upgrade both XD and XDM as well as your shotgun. www.tacttec.com |

It really just depends on what you want. Both the older XD and the newer XDM are great guns. I use a XD for carry and use the XDM (This one isn't mine but I have one pretty close) for competition |

I like them both, the XD is a little lighter which makes it easier to carry. The XDm has the removeable back straps which allow you to make the grip a little smaller then the regular XD. That's important for me because I have small hands.
The XD has had the grip reduced and stippled by a local shop ( www.bobscustomshop.com) and all of the aftermarket parts for both of them came from Tactical technologies ( www.tacttec.com).
I like the XDM better but that's mostly because of the grip size and shape. They are both a lot of fun to shoot.

I have shot about 2000 rounds with it and love the gun. For me the XDM would not be as easy to conceal and I would more than likely only use it for range shooting. With that in mind I will waite for the 45 cal in the XDM. That would be my next interest and there has been no talk of a 45 in the XDM that I have heard of.

Hello! My first post! I discovered this site during my hours of research/debate on my first purchase, and have found it very helpful.
Long story short... I am looking for my first pistol. I am set on a .40S&W, but have been in a long self-debate over Sig vs. Glock vs. XD. I have come to the conclusion that XD is best for me b/c it fits well in my hand, has plenty of safety features for a first-timer, price is cheap, and comes with many accessories.
My new dilemma is compact 4" vs. XDM. Ultimately, I want one pistol for home/range and one to carry. I just don't think a 4" would satisfy this... it would always leave me longing for a 3" SubC. SO... I have finally come to the conclusion that I will purchase the XDM first, and learn my way with pistols and enjoy the range with it.... then once I am comfortable with it and confident to carry, I will reopen my debate on which SubC to purchase. The XDM comes with even more accessories and sounds like it has some good upgrades. I think in the long run I will be more happy this way. I hope my talking out-loud has helped some other people on the fence.
Now, a couple of questions...
Is it worth paying extra for two-tone, black and stainless, in the XDM?
What prices are people paying for XDMs right now?
....maybe I can work a good cash deal with a shop for a XDM and a SubC in one deal!
I appreciate your past advise and look forward to more!

Hey Hutch98R1 Welcome to the forum. I started in here the same way you did. It's great for the learning process with guns. With regard to your thought process, I think you're on the right track. I think the first thing you need to make sure of is that you like the gun you decide on. My first gun was a Ruger GP100 revolver. a great gun form home defence and range shooter, but not great for carrying. I purchased a Ruger LCP for carry purposes, and have recently decided that I wanted an XDm. I like all of them but they each have their own purpose. I absolutely love my XDm but it's a little large for general carry. You should try to shoot as many as possible before making your decision. I just bought my XDm a couple of weeks ago for $540 out the door. I think that was a pretty good price for the all black. The prices are all over the place for either type so you'll have to do some research and digging throught this forum.
Good Luck and again Welcome to the forum!

For me the stainless slide version is a must as I just prefer that and most of my handguns are SS. As far as price difference goes; the SS versions run $40 to $60 dollars more than the black.

| shinerjohn,
My wife and I have a couple of XDs, in 45ACP, a 4" Service and 5" Tactical...
...and our next purchase with most likely be another XD in either 40S&W or 9mm.
For us, we want to have the same design of XD in our hands when we're awakened at 0'dark thirty and not have to wonder, in that split-second decision moment, if we need to fumble for a safety or not.
Our XDs perform as needed and we'll be sticking with them...
...even though the new XDM design looks/works nicely.
I'm looking forward to reading what your choice is and seeing pics.

I appreciate your past advise and look forward to more! | I checked Cabelas ($699) and Bass Pro ($729) today for two-tone XDMs. I won't pay those prices.

I'm new to the site and I've decided to go with the XD Sub .40 black on black ($533). This will be my concealed carry weapon in the fine state of Missouri. I'll of course have to use the extended mag due being a large guy. My current weapon is a Beretta 92FS which is a little harder to conceal. I like the XDm but don't want to wait for other models to slowly be put into production.
