Question XD or XDM??

Went in to my local gun shop this afternoon. I wanted to look at Glocks and the dealer steered me toward XD. I really like it in 40 S&W. He has at least 2 NIB in the case: one black ($529), one bitone ($589). He will come down off those prices for me, probably about $60 or so.
Question: Should I drive a hard bargain for one of these XDs or order the XD-M?
Let me rephrase my question. If the largest caliber you had was 9mm Luger and you wanted an Springfield Armory .40 S&W, would you go for a good price on the XD or wait for a "going-rate" price on the XD-M? If it was you....

Thanks, guys and gals!

I only have the XDm, but that was because of the timing of the whole thing. I didn't have any gun and then when I was ready, I was presented with the XDm and bought it. I didn't do a comparison of the XD to the XDm at the time. Now that I've researched it, I can say that they're basically the same gun. The "m" may hold more rounds and have a more ergonomic grip, but I believe they both have a hammer-forged, match-grade barrel. I also think they both have strike indicators and loaded chamber indicators. The "m" probably has more stuff in the box when you buy it, but whatever the XD doesn't have, you can buy it later if you need it - I've never used the magazine loading device, the magazine holster, the lock...you should consider whether you need that extra stuff. So...if you have plenty of $$, I would suggest the XDm, but if you're like the rest of us and paying more for gas and everything else, you may want to get the best price on the XD and feel good about it. Its ultimately up to you. I have no complaints about the XDm, and since I'm used to it, I'll probably continue with the XDm line as they come out in various sizes and calibers. Good luck and let us know what you decide, B.

I believe the XDm also has a 4.5" barrel, if that makes a difference to you.

What is the purpous of this gun? Carry? Home? Range? For carry I would go XD Subcompact. That is what I have for my own carry gun and I love it. Fits in palm of my hand. . For home or range I'd go XDM due to 16 + 1 rounds and extra grips. The XDM is due to come out with a 9MM. At that point you might see the cost of the .40 XDM drop. Can you hold off a few months to buy it?

XDM is nice and a more punch if you can afford it for the 40 cal.

Personally I would love to get a XDM.

I have the XD and it's awesome. They are really awesome guns compared to the Glock. The ergonomics are the big thing to me compared to the glock. The new Glocks have those lines are the grip, and I don't care for it.

Originally, I was looking for a house gun. I already have the following for carry: Kahr CW9, S&W 642, Ruger LCP, Bersa Thunder 380, Taurus 85UL. Other than my 30-30 rifile, 9mm is the largest caliber I have at home and I wanted to improve that situation.
But after looking at the XD, I would be sorely tempted to carry it. I'm not a big person: 5'10", 165 lbs. And my work prohibits firearms, so being "made" is a primary concern. That's why I have the LCP.
I think at first, I was thinking perhaps the XD was being replaced by the XD-M. But it appears to be a larger, heavier weapon and the XD (I think) will remain with us.
Assuming the handgun will NOT be carried concealed, I have the money, but I don't like waiting, do you think the XD-M has enough significant features to wait for?
Thanks for all your responses.

as I have said, we just bought the XDM on friday, have yet to shoot it, but wow, that is some pistol. I think for the money, you can't beat it...it fits in the hand nicely, and with the grips it comes with to change out, it can fit anyone hands nicely. I think it would be pretty easy to conceal for a .40

My vote is go with the XDM.

There's a pretty descent write up about the XDm vs the XD in the new issue of G&A Handguns. I have yet to hear anything negative about the XDm.

XDM is the way to go unless it is for carry purpouses and you live a lifestyle taht your wordrobe makes it tough to conceal a gun. Then the XD in subcompact. I own 2 XD's and very much look forward to getting the XDM. I thik I am going to hold off for the XDM until the 9MM comes out. Something about 20 rounds in a Springfield sounds good to me.

If you still can't decide why not one of each? Can a person own too many Springfield's?

Smile Looks like XD-M

Just got back from the gun shop. He will order me a new XD-M for $599. That sounds pretty reasonable for a small town.
I looked at the XDs again. If I get one of those, I'll probably get the Tactical. I like the idea of a 5" barrel.
Yes, I guess I could get both, but I might have to get a new girlfriend too. Heck, I only have eleven! But this time last year I only had two......
I think I'll wait until my malfunctioning Taurus 85 comes back. If they don't send me a new one, my dealer said he would make it right. I'm thinking I could just apply that amount to a Springfield.
Right now, I'm leaning pretty heavy toward the XD-M. Thanks for your input.

The XDm is a big handgun. The XDm has a 4 1/2 inch barrel. The trigger on the XDm is quite impressive for a striker fired pistol.
Go for what feels good to you. As for the match barrel I really feel the trigger helps as much as anything.
I can conceal carry 2 Glock 23's as easy as one XDm.

I guess what it really boils down to is do you want a match grade pistol or is the XD good enough for your intended purpose? The XD-M has the match grade barrel. I don't do any competitive shooting but I love to bring home a target with the middle part blown out. lol

Either will work for me

since I don't shoot competitively. I think I'll try to find that issue of G&A magazine.

Your opinions are important to me because they are well thought out. Y'all point out issues I haven't considered.

I truly appreciate your responses.

Guns & Ammo article

After reading the XDm article in Oct/Nov issue, I will go with the XDm. The improvement in recoil reduction settles it for me. Either pistol would be good, but I don't see how I could wrong with the improved XDm. Ruger100, thanks for mentioning the magazine article.

Glad I could help, I think the article was a selling feature for me as well. Probably next month. Let us know what you think of it.

Thumbs down No gotteee yet....

I expect Taurus to send the same 85UL back as if it's fixed. They said last Friday that it should be soon. If they do, I'll wrangle my dealer out of the XDm. I've bought too many guns from him for him to give me trouble....
So it could be another week or two depending on BrazTech.

As an aside, I've very carefully limited myself to 380, 38spec, and 9mm. Am I wise to add 40 s&w? or should I just order the 9mm XD?

Ithink I'm waiting until October when the gun show comes back to Orlando. $540...I can't even come close anywhere else.
