The sad thing is, I BELIEVE this.

Putin reportedly saves TV crew from tiger - Russia - MSNBC.com

Putin tranqs tiger in wildlife preserve when it breaks loose from some researchers.

"Just as Putin was arriving with a group of wildlife specialists to see a trapped Amur tiger, it escaped and ran toward a nearby camera crew, the country's main television station said. Putin quickly shot the beast and sedated it with a tranquilizer gun."

He then helped measure it and put a radio collar on.

He thanked us, anyway.

"First of all, we must thank our colleagues, Americans, European colleagues for being involved with this during a difficult time for Russia when no-one was paying any attention to this,"

Like I said, I'm actually inclined to believe this. Guy's hardcore. Now if Kim Jong Il had said this...

Image is everything! Especially when you get it on tv... The man's hardcore allright. Karate expert and smart, calculating mind as well. It doesn't mean he brings any good to the world though. We've seen time after time that we never really know where we have the Russians in issues regarding territorial rights up north, were we have a long lasting dispute with them. Weird macho people!

And Putin just happened to be carrying a tranquilizer gun? And the trank hit the tiger so fast he dropped in his tracks? Please.

First, the range on a trank gun is very short. Second, it takes at least a minute or two for the drug to affect the animal. Contrary to what people are conditioned to by heavily edited wildlife shows on TV and the use of a scout-scoped tranquilizer gun on Buffy the Vampire Slayer to control Oz when he was in werewolf form, it is not a case of shoot-and-drop.

Why do I think this whole thing was a setup? Either that, or Putin was luckier than he had any right to be.

Actually, from the video, I wouldn't be surprised if Putin wanted to carry the gun. After his experience with the KGB, he's likely a good shot.

In addition, I think they were inflating the immediate danger. If you look at the video, the tiger was moving off, parallel to the crew, maybe 30 feet off. Likely Putin shot it as it was moving, most tranqed animals move away from the direction of the shot, due to the pain the dart produces. They wander a bit, get woozy, then lay down and nod off.

It wouldn't surprise me if he asked (or ordered) them to let him do it as the animal started to move off. Image-conscious man that he is. I don't believe it was a roar, leap, and shoot situation, but I am inclined to believe they let him take the shot that put it out.

Anybody who would order Putin not to do anything in Russia would have ----- the size of bowling balls and a brain the size of a peanut.

the guy who tells the story gets to be the hero.

LOL Cyrano, I agree. I don't know why they even had him use a tranq. He could have just as easily have brought the tiger down with one of his well placed KGB karate chops!
