California Bans Porn in Prisons

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Prison inmates have been banned from receiving pornography because of complaints from female prison guards that the material prompted inappropriate behavior.

In imposing the ban Sept. 10, prison officials said the materials fueled a hostile working environment.

"This is not a question of the inmates enjoying a little private time in their cells. They are doing it to make the officers angry," state corrections spokesman Russ Heimerich told the Los Angeles Times for editions Sunday.

Before the ban, prison officials had allowed inmates to receive Playboy, Penthouse and other explicit material, censoring only highly offensive depictions.

But as the number of female correctional officers has increased, there has been a corresponding rise in complaints about inappropriate conduct by male inmates, Heimerich said.

"It is posted all over the place -- on their lockers, on the walls of their cells. They even put it in their pants pocket," said Sheree Ghidelli, a guard at Pleasant Valley State Prison.

Heimerich said the department worries about possible sexual harassment lawsuits. "We're vulnerable," he said. "We had to take action."

Inmate advocates and civil libertarians called the ban an overreaction and said it violates an inmate's First Amendment rights.

"This is like banning 'Catcher in the Rye' because it might induce a prisoner to say something disrespectful," said David Fathi, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Maybe I'm an anachronistic relic, but I personally think putting female guards in a prison full of male hard-cases is pure stupidity.
These guys are already doing hard time. You think they're worried about a harrassment suit? Brain-check!!

I agree that having female prison guards is extremely stupid. But why are these wards of the state getting porn? Put them in their striped pajamas and let them fight some forest fires or hoe weeds on the side of the road. Chain them togather and build something useful so they leave prison with a skill, a manual skill.

I guess it could be expected from California. But doesn't this also really serve to show California's hypocrasy? The land of do what you feel and everything to everybody is now taking rights away from prisoners?? Didn't California lead the nation in making prisons like country clubs a while back?

I think that just leads to rape in the prisons anyway, get all worked up, go rape some newbie (which they shouldn't be in prison anyway, but if ya do the crime ya gotta do the HARD time!)

I think they should allow Playboy, Penthouse, Etc. Without the pictures. Then they could do what most men say when discussing Playboy within earshot of a woman..."I get it for the articles".
