Century Arms International (CAI) has a special on Steyr's this month, $69.95 each, or 3 for $150. They're advertised as good condition with cracked stocks, but everyone I've talked to says the "cracks" are hard to find, or at most, barely noticable.
I've got 3 coming on Monday........ I'll let you know what they're like.
Got the Steyr's today, ordered one of each to compare the different models:
Top; Hungarian, Budapest stamp on receiver, walnut stock (big plus), very small piece of wood missing behind receiver under bolt. Metal finish is good (I've seen worse), sight spring is broken. All-in-all, nothing that can't be repaired.
Middle; Austrian, looks to be a lighter wood (maple?) with a bit of tiger-stripe showing through a worn shellac finish at the butt. Fine crack along right side below sight, about 3-4 inches long, also small hairline crack near rear of reciever, both repairable. Metal looks good, rifling looks sharp.
Lower; M95/34 with what looks to be a nice looking maple stock. Finish is a bit sloppy but normal for these. Can't find any cracks whatsoever. All metal looks as close to new as I've ever seen, no scratches or finish wear anywhere. Looks like a brand new barrel & receiver from the outside. Haven't cleaned the bore but rifling looks very sharp.
All in all, very pleased with what I got for the price. A little TLC here and there, some stock re-finishing, and they should all turn out great! A helluva bargain for the price!
Don't really know what is "supposed" to be there but the Austrian definitely has the most noticable and visible cracks, the Hungarian has the small "chunk" of wood missing behind the reciever and maybe a hairline crack near the butt plate (or a scratch?), and the M95/34 looks very clean but has either a few "scratches" or possible hairline cracks near the back of the receiver. They look more like scratches than cracks....
wow!!!!!!what an awsome purchase.i might have to take the plunge on that deal.i have considered this rifle before, but for $70 whats to consider.or better yet get two friends and get it for $50.
Glad I could help. The way I see it, it's hard to even find a "parts" gun for $50 bucks....
If anyone else orders some from Century, please let me know the condition and what you think of them. I've got friends that are foaming at the mouth to know what the concensus is from others and in fact, I'm even thinking about ordering another 3 myself (Hmmmmm.... how can I explain this to the Mrs.....?)
By the way, an added plus is that Century has a flat shipping rate of $12.95, no matter if you order 1 rifle or 100. Unless you have to pay Florida sales tax, the total cost when you order 3 is $162.95 or about $54 and change each. CHEAP!
