Obama, McCain backers compete over veterans, gun control
The White House race between Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain came back to Colorado this week as Democratic veterans credited Obama with supporting broad increases in veteran benefits while Republicans countered that McCain was the best man on gun-owner rights and Western issues.
From Renewing America’s Promise, the 2008 Democratic National Platform.
Firearms:
1) We recognize that the right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ Second Amendment right to own and use firearms.
2) We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation, but we know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne.
3) We can work together to enact and enforce commonsense laws and improvements – like closing the gun show loophole, improving our background check system, and reinstating the assault weapons ban, so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals.
4) Acting responsibly and with respect for differing views on this issue, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe.

From the 2008 Republican Platform:
Upholding the Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms
1) We uphold the right of individual Americans to own firearms, a right which antedated the Constitution and was solemnly confirmed by the Second Amendment.
2) We applaud the Supreme Court’s decision in Heller affirming that right, and we assert the individual responsibility to safely use and store firearms.
3) We call on the next president to appoint judges who will similarly respect the Constitution.
4) Gun ownership is responsible citizenship, enabling Americans to defend themselves, their property, and communities.
5) We call for education in constitutional rights in schools, and we support the option of firearms training in federal programs serving senior citizens and women.
6) We urge immediate action to review the automatic denial of gun ownership to returning members of the Armed Forces who have suffered trauma during service to their country.
7) We condemn frivolous lawsuits against firearms manufacturers, which are transparent attempts to deprive citizens of their rights.
8) We oppose federal licensing of law-abiding gun owners and national gun registration as violations of the Second Amendment.
9) We recognize that gun control only affects and penalizes law-abiding citizens, and that such proposals are ineffective at reducing violent crime.
Norm
Most restrictive gun-control legislation is sponsored by and initiated by democrats. This is a fact (not conjecture). Using the democrat logic, the right of freedom of speech would be different in Pittsburgh than in Cleveland, and the press in Phonenix would be required to "register" its typewriters (and writing stories about horses in Phoenix would be illegal Thursday through Sunday) while the press in Los Angeles could print unrestricted. Using their logic, Islamic mosques would have to be painted brown and located 1000 feet from any school, while Catholic churches (being a "reasonable" religion used for legitimate sporting purposes) could be located anywhere. Protestant churches could be any color and located anywhere, but would have to be registered and pass a background check. Synagogues could only be located across from planted hardwood trees, and would only be allowed to open from 0914 until 1622 local time (and you'd have to fill out a form under oath about your past to enter them).
All of this is as constitutionally legitimate as current firearms laws, and makes about as much sense.

Who gets to define what the Dems call "Responsible" and "Sensible"?
Why re-enact the AWB ban which had utterly NOTHING to do with "Assault Weapons" to begin with?
They most definitely DO want to saddle the country towns with Big City gun laws - that is what Federal Law is all about - it doesn't differ due to location.
The "Gunshow Loophole" is a Brady Bunch Myth - it has never existed.
Very few crimes have ever been committed with so-called "assault weapons". Homey can't conceal an AK as well as a gat.
If the 80 million gun owners could come together and vote properly and in a unified front - this wouldn't even BE an issue.
An assault weapons ban that bans anything other than true assault weapons ie: weapons capable of full automatic fire, is not an assault weapons ban. It is a civil rights ban preventing American Citizens from owning legal semi-automatic weapons for self defense or hunting.
After having an assault weapons ban in place for several years there was never any proof that the ban kept guns out of the hands of criminals and terrorists. They seemed to have plenty. The crime rate went up because only honest, law abiding, American citizens obey the law even though it violates their Civil Rights for self defense. To the criminal breaking one more law doesn't make any difference. The people who cannot see and understand this should not be in a position to make laws for We, the people, the Citizens of the United States. Vote them out now!

I support Arizona
Every so many years some liberal politicians get together and decide the time is right to ban assault weapons.
They always fail because they are actually trying to get their foot in the door for their eventual goal of banning all guns.
I remember some politician adding a clause that any gun that had more than five bullets was a dangerous assault weapon.
This would cause me lose my .22 lever and pump rifles so we really need to support the NRA and the current Republican ticket to counteract these liberal fools.
Funny how Democrats always have gun control on the table. Typical Socialist agenda.
"Our task of creating a socialist America can only succeed when those who would resist us have been TOTALLY disarmed". Sarah Brady 1994 I'm sorry her husband got shot. He should of had a gun to defend himself.
