Universal Mi Carbine...Chamber stuck open

Just inherited Universal M1 carbine...No magazine, no ammo...Chamber open, will not close as it should when I try to jack back and release the bolt lever.
Bought mag & ammo (Numrich). Loaded mag okay...inserted into receiver okay. Got a solid click okay. Try as I might I can't get the bolt slide to go back so I can close chamber and load 1st round. Feelin' pretty stupid !!
Saftey's on (green), Can see round okay, can't find any button or lever to close chamber.
Help !!!

That rifle should be checked prior to firing. It should have passed some preliminary checks before loading even. Sounds like it wouldn't have passed. It may not have a recoil spring.Run it by a gunsmith prior to testing. Would the bolt close with no magazine in it? If the slide wont go back and then foward when it's empty, there is something wrong.

If I understand your problem, it may be that the recoil spring has buckled somehow. Does it have one or two recoil springs? Have you taken it apart to check for any obstructions?
You can find some fairly good info here Universal M1 Carbine Info
I concur with pasts above that perhaps a trip to a gunsmith is in order.
Take it apart and thorougly inspect the parts.
Don't try shooting it until you or, preferably, a gunsmith has given it a good to go.
BTW, don't feel stupid...you are seeking information. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask.
