| I'm so Proud of my Mom!
Mom went out and shot her new concealed carry gun tonight for the first time (mom's an anti turned somewhat pro-gunner, she's only been shooting about a year and half). It's a little Taurus 85 ultra light. It stung the heck out of her hand and her hand turned bright red, but she stuck with it and put 60 rounds through it. I put 5 through it myself... I'm very pleased with the little thing, really. It seems to function better than expected. And her second first... she shot her first semi-auto pistol! I am so proud! She's scared to death of semi-autos because they kick the shells out, but she put 10 round through my Glock 26. She almost dropped it after the first shot, but she hung on and put all 10 through it. I even got her to learn the functioning of it. She didn't like it, unfortunetly. I think it was mostly because the grip was so tiny. But she's considering attempting to shoot my 1911 on our next range trip. She wouldn't touch the Glock 21. LOL! On another note... I just got glasses for the first time. Apparently I really did need them. I haven't been shooting well. Well, tonight I got one heck of a sweet group out of my Glock 21 again. So I have resigned myself to the glasses.

| My mom thought she was. But I pushed her out there. Actually, she got really interested when I brought her info about the Cowboy Shooting. She's still recovering from double knee replacement right now, but we got her out there on a stool.

"Stop or my Mom will shoot!" Seriously though, congratulations to your mother. And to you, if you need glasses use them. You can only shoot as well as you can see. |

I love these stories, about new shooters learning the ropes, and getting interested in other aspects of the sport. Congrats, for getting your Mom out to the range.

I, too, have a Taurus 85 & I just love it, although the kick is a wee bit more than my .380! My mother in law herself has recently gotten her permit & carries a .22 derringer. I am so proud of every women, no matter the age, who takes up arms! You go mama!!

Sucklead, I'm confused. You said the Taurus stung her a bit. What load is she shooting out of it? .38 Special + lightweight frame + 2 inch barrel = hellacious recoil for someone not used to it. If she is willing to take a look at your M1911A1, she can't be too afraid of the weight. Even though she does not like semi-autos "because they kick the shells out" - is she left-handed, by any chance? - you might think about trying her on a FEG Model PA-63, a Walther PP or a FEG Model AP-MBP. The PA-63 is 9x18 Makarov, not as powerful a cartridge as the .38 Special; the Walther PP is either .32 ACP or .380 ACP, ditto; and the AP-MBP is .32 ACP. The PP and the MBP are only a little longer than the Taurus, weigh just a little more, and don't slap your hand when you shoot. Their 4 inch barrels are more accurate, too. She might like them. If she stays with the Model 85 Ultralight, I suggest you get her some Pachmayr rubber grips for it. That should put a stop to the pistol slapping her palm. Glad to hear she's shooting, but she'll shoot more, and with greater enthusiasm, if a range session doesn't leave her hurting. Parenthetic note: Southern Ohio Gun is selling PA-63s for $109 apiece, and J&G Sales is selling the AP-MBP for $120 each. And Numrich has spare magazines at about $20 each for the PA-63; while Centerfire Systems has them for the AP-MBP for a little less. You might think about giving her a present. |
