Sportical

Just recieved October NRA mag today. Read an interesting article on the DPMS Sportical. Can't quite figure out why I like the concept but I do. Just how bad would a SHTF situation be where you actually needed forward assist?

DPMS: AR-15 Rifles, Parts and Accessories.

My opinion is that the forward assist should only be in situations where you pull the bolt half back to check if it's loaded, and if it is, ease the bolt back home and use the forward assist to make sure it's solidly locked in.

I would never use the FA during a double feed or any other type of jam, since it would only make it worse. You're better off ripping the mag, and racking the action instead, or just switching over to your handgun if you're in that much of a bind.

I have to admit thats a logical use for FA Iv'e never used. Good ole Military teaches us to clear the weapon. FA is a last chance to chamber a round that is not completely in battery by design. Still a good use though. Thanks for the education.

Immediate Action Procedures (SPORTS)
If the weapon fails to fire:
S Slap upward on bottom of magazine to ensure magazine is fully seated
P Pull charging handle to rear
O Observe to see if a round or cartridge casing was ejected and chamber
and receiver area are clear (if chamber or receiver is not clear, proceed
to remedial action)
R Release charging handle (allow bolt to slam forward)
T Tap forward assist button to ensure bolt is fully forward
S Shoot

Sounds like a classic Tap-Rack-Ready drill to me. Tap the mag, rack the action, check and ready to go. SPORTS is another good way to remember it. I'll have to write that one down!

They have to make it easy for AF guys, were more accustomed to throwing wrenches from the flight line tool box. LOL.
