Ship Seized by Somali Pirates Carrying 33 Russian Tanks

FOXNews.com - Ship Seized by Somali Pirates Carrying 33 Russian Tanks - International News | News of the World | Middle East News | Europe News

GAR!!! ... de Somali Pirates er done fer makie a mistakie now !
(I know... not Pirate Day anymore)

Okay... my personal speculation here: I wonder if that was put out with full-knowledge it would be attacked by Pirates to justify another reason for Russia to get involved in the area?

Coelptera, your thoughts?

The pirates in the Somali waters have been active for many, many years. I've seen some TV shows where they feature situations such as Somali pirates attacking and boarding a cruise ship. I think on Futureweapons, they were showing off a sound device that's installed on some ships now to deter pirates.

I'll bet they just saw that ship as another target of opportunity and were fortunate enough to get a hold of a bunch of military equipment.

Now... my big question is, why did Russia have 33 tanks in that area?

I'm not so sure that is a fortunate grab ... as the Russians are pretty ticked off over it.

Just another sign , the 33 tanks and or other military equipment, were on a ship heading where, that something is coming?

Apparently, they were purchased by Sudan (what a shocker, huh?)

... and Hatter... I do believe they will receive an ultimatum, give everything back, NOW ... or face the consequences of a military kind.

Now they gotta go kidnap some Russian tank crews to run the things for them. Otherwise, they'll just sit somewhere and rust.
On another note, why is anyone operating in these waters without some kind of weapons-type defense?

It said they sold them to Kenya. Seems funny though that the ruskies, KNOWING that those waters are filled with pirates would send 33 tanks without at least a couple of warships to escort it. HMMM

I agree... wouldn't it be funny to put a ship out there... looking all kinds of vulnerable... and when the pirates attack, it drops "camouflage" to reveal naval weaponry, SEALS and other nasties of the sea ?!

I'd laugh my a*s off ...

All depends on when ownership transfers. If ownership transfers upon their departure from Russia then Russia has already been paid. Why should they care.

Good point Rock, but I would think whoever bought them would have made it part of the deal that Russia make sure they are delivered to point of destination since they obviously were unable to. I know I would.

The Somali pirates are probably feeling like Redford and his partner in the beginning of the movie, 'The Sting.' Like, "uh-oh...what have we done?"

according to the news article they were bound for kenya as a rearmement for their military. looks like they went all the way around africa inorder to avoid somolia altogther, but ended up getting caught anyways. they also stated that the pirates would have a hard time unloading these tanks and ammo on to others. all they would need to do is take all the ammo and dump the tanks and spare parts into the ocean. its hard to track ammo once its out of its cases and boxes. there is so much russian ammo in the world today, that it would be easy to mingle this in with the rest. JMO.

Well, we didn't do so great in Somali so let the Russians have a go at it. Hope they do a roundup of pirates and war lords and hang them from the yardarm or shoot them on the spot.

Knowing Sudan, they could have told the pirates about or sent them to do it so they could get even more out of or from Russia? Or, maybe Russia set the theft up to not have to deliver the goods? Who knows. Personally in this day and age, no one is to be or should be or can be trusted...

Or maybe, just maybe the pirates got REAL lucky. lol
