The new S&W target models are suppose to shoot even better than the old 41's and at less than half the cost. I would get an S&W or Browning. I have the Browning Varmit and it shoots dime size groups. they have a 5 or 5 1/2" target model with good sights thats suppose to really shoot. I looked up SGT. Knuckles choice and it looks like a fair deal to me.

I'm your age, shot a Ruger MkI target model for years. I now have another MkI target and a Mark II .22/45. I would heartily recommend the Ruger. Good price, good gun.

Nothing against the others mentioned, but I think the Ruger will give you the most gun for the dollar. That Browning is just too pretty to shoot!

even though i am a ruger "nut" and this is the ruger forum, i firmly believe the browning buckmark to be the more accurate handgun while the ruger is the more reliable handgun.............

nothing wrong with smith 22a either----------just does not fit me.........

a low-end plain vanilla buckmark is plenty accurate.

if you are going to go with an optic such as a dot or a scope, the smith will save you money with its built in mount system.

I agree with Deputy I own a Browning and an AMT (Ruger clone only better) and did own a S&W 41 the Browning is the best of several very good guns. But if I were you I would go to a large gun shop and handle all the above to see what fits you the best.

Remember to ask for the target models if you're going to be shooting in competition. They will often have different barrels, sights, and triggers. And prices!

Oh Yeah -- Welcome to group of friendly people with more opinions than you have money, unless you won the lottery recently.

I agree with bb. You need to go handle them and pick your new pistol based on fit.

IMO, the flat out best target pistol available is probably the S&W 41. For those with Champaign tastes and a beer budget, the Rugers are a terrific bargain.
