Our gardening turned out to be a bust

We put alot of effort into our gardening this year, starting everything from seeds in the winter to buying expensive organic gardening soil when planted... Our harvest was low and I guess the only reason was that our spring here was terrible... very dissapointed, but will go at it again in the spring !!

I had pretty good results with tomatoes every week and a good lettuce crop. Try getting some heirloom seeds, at the Ark Institute. Going to go full throttle this spring, to try to keep ahead of the price curve on produce. Good soil recipe:
1/3 vermiculite
1/3 compost
1/3 peat moss
with a little mushroom compost.

I used to do all that. I have found that most veggies do better, higher yields if you wait for warm weather, first part of June, then plant your seeds. I use a modified raised bed, and I work in chicken manure the winter before. The only thing I start in my greenhouse are Tomatoes and peppers.
What really slows your garden down are soil temp, you can control this. and night time air temps, if it gets below 55* it tends to stunt the plant for a period of time. Covering the plants if your getting cold weather with a large sheet of clear lastic helps.
