Hum...A .22 or a real gun-.223:7.62x39

Well I've heard a few arguements on both sides and, well, I guess I want to hear some more;

.223 compared to 7.63x39-Pros, Cons. Why the switch? All that jazz.

my personnal opinion. do u know whats going on with iraq right now soldiers are picking up the iraqis AK's becuse like 97% of the time a haji is hiding behind a cement wall a 223 caliber bullet will not go through like a cement hospitol wall but a Ak will im pretty sure AK is supposed to have thestrongest bullets for a assault style rifle because there is steel i had a ak and the bullets do not go so far they just penetrate hard 223 can go eight hundred yards compared to 200 so u get to choose speed or hard hitting

Depending on what type of bullet you use the .223 can be a very effective weapon. I have seen the .223 go through 1/2 inch slab of steel. It has very high velocity and will tuble into the body after impact. You also could purchase soft tips, armor piercing, and hollow points. No matter what anyone says this weapon has worked for the military since the Vietnam war.

Just get one of each. Why, because if Obama gets in and gets his and the Democrats way, you probably won't be able to get either, not even the .22.

Shooting USA Shooting Sports Television

Once there, click on the Official Democratic and Republican Positions on Gun Control. Then in that window, click on "View The Official Platform" for each party. You can also google HR1022 and see everyting listed on that bill. You'll see the .22 is on it...

Personally, the .243 and the 7mm/08 are my

favorite cartridges but given your set of choices I would go with the
7.62 round as it has more hunting possibilities.

That depends, the AR is essentially a varmint gun. Really good for coyotes and things of that nature. Especially if you want to keep the pelt.
I live in Indiana and the laws here dictate the ammo used for hunting. The state is mostly flat so you can't hunt with anything that will carry because it could hit someone on their front porch.

If they're only good for varminting, why are so many sold for other uses and used by our military. As for our military, the only draw back I'm hearing of is it won't go through the walls those cowards they're fighting are hiding behind. But they take out targets up to what, 400 and 500yds. away that aren't behind walls? And they aint varmints. lol

But I agree, the 7.62 is a better bullet. But I just love the .223. But that's me. lol

I have both, and to me they are just as accurate as they are advertised..the AR goes up to 500+ pretty damn accurately...the AK will go 300+ pretty accurately in single fire mode.
And if taken care of, these rifles are both pretty field worthy..
Very robust/conscript ready construction on the AK and deadly accuracy with AR.
As far as penetrability the .223 is quite the lil penetrator. The 7.62 whacks a helluva punch though.
Good guns and they are both sexy as hell.

It doesn't take much to incapacitate a soldier, and remove him from the battlefield. Both the AR and the AK do so nicely. As far as hunting, the .223 is best suited to varmints, while the 7.62 will take a deer out to about 100-150m safely.

When I started this thread I wasn't asking to compare the AR and the AK. I just noticed whats happening.
I ment the .223 and 7.62 in the M16 which is better (in your opinion)?
I'm an ex-Marine so I've been told several times why the switch. I'm just wanting to hear what y'all believe. Thats alot more interesting.

Hi Gator Amos

I'm still with the 7.62 as it opens up the opportunity for deer.
Personally, I would also prefer it as a self-defense cartridge.

I think I'll have to agree with that. 7.62 is great for hunting medium and up game i.e. deer. One of the biggest reasons the military switched is it tends to incapacitate rather than kill. .223 will pass right through were as 7.62 can kill from hydrostatic shock alone. Damn Liberals.

Ways around passing through are hollow points and frangible(fragmenting) rounds. I use frangible in my DW 44mag so if someone breaks in it wont go through the wall and kill the kids, the neighbor, and his dog.
