I'm looking for answers on this same topic. I found this and decided I'd plug you guys for an answer and never come back too!
But seriously, I have a Remington 722 in 257 roberts. The scope is origonal but now it's hazey and fogs way too much. I'm looking to spend upwards of $500-750 on a scope for it. (It's my grandfathers gun and I want to do it justice). I'm going to be hunting deer in heavy brush, hogs in heavy brush and open fields. My hunting grounds range from deep East Texas, San Antonio to San Angelo.
Blind hunting happens in East Texas where the stand is about 25feet from the ground under 100ft pine trees (shaded, low light). The surrounding area is cleared of brush for 75yards. I can open scope the first 50yards so it's not a real concern. Range while stalking game will be from 50yards to 250yards. Again, I'll open scope the things under 50yards. All this will be daylight hunting with a majority of it happening at dusk and dawn. When night hunting axis and hog I use my 30-30 lever action (safer when stumbling around in the woods- I don't want a "Remington moment").
Balistic charts rate the 257 to be +1.6 at 100 and dead on at 200 yards. I'm currently looking at Nikons because that's what I know. I'm far from an expert and really haven't looked into scopes much.
