I understand there have been some rule changes and as it is, I see mostly Glocks, 1911's & Berettas at my local matches. Add to this, I live in CA, so I doubt all the competitors "shoot what they carry."
I got into IDPA to have fun & maybe learn something about combat/tactical shooting. Now, I think I wanna get more into the gamesmanship. Bottomline, is there such thing as an ideal gun for this game (for SSP)?
I know a few IDPA shooters who swear by the Kimber Classic Stainless, (now Custom Stainless II I think). I also have heard that Glocks do very well. If you like a 1911, then a Kimber is hard to beat for the $. I have never shot IDPA, but a Kimber would be my first choice not by preference, but by what IDPA shooters tell be about their out-of-the box performance.
I'd have to agree with you, most of these folks are not actually carrying the gun they shoot in the match. If it's gamesmenship you are interested in, it was a stock Barretta that won overall at last years National, don't have the newsletter in front of me to give you specifics.
Find a light kicking cartridge/gun combination with a smooth, reliable action, a quality holster, and practice, practice, practice.
Sounds a bit like IPSC to me...
Where I am at it has been most difficult to inject any tactical reality into the matches. Most of those involved are gamers... Imagine a match where no penalties are awarded (at all, period!) every target is assigned two shots, and IPSC raceguns are allowed. Some of us are working to change that but the resistance has been amazing.
