Homemade Brass Catcher

Homemade Brass Catcher

I really enjoy reloading. My problem is that with just one leg its a challenge to pick up the brass ejected from from autos. So, I made me a brass catcher out of an old t-shirt and a length of hot/cold PVC pipe from Lowes. It works even better that I had anticipated and it didn't cost hardly anything.

Here are the Pics:

Here is the thing put together. PVC and old T-shirt. The black clips keep it from sagging.

Here is the frame I made from the PVC pipe

Here is how I take the frame apart to put in in my backpack for when I go to the range.

It ain't patented so feel free use/modify my homemade brass catcher.

How will you be using it? I mean, from the looks of it, it isn't small. It isn't meant to attach to a firearm is it? Can you explain just how you use it?

It looks like you just stand it at the height you're shooting at or they're ejecting at and that's it, yea/no? Again, please explain or even post a picture of how you use or will use it?

I am going to be going near a Lowes this this week and am picking up the material to construct your brass catcher. This is the best idea I have seen in quite some time my friend. I am disabled with compound scoliosis and shoot mostly semi-autos. Bending down for the empties is hell on me and this catcher will do the trick. Thanks for sharing your idea, I thank you immensley. woodhippy

Clever idea, I like it. I use an old fold up laundry hamper that is made of mesh with a wire frame. I think we got it at Wal-Mart, I lay it on it's side close to the rifle when shooting from the bench and it works pretty good.

I'll probably make one like yours in the near future, thanks for sharing.

Looks to me like it's for bench-top shooting. You set it up on the table next to your gun, and it catches them as they fly out. Should work great for rifles, but my 1911's like to throw 'em over my shoulder, or bounce 'em off my head.

Yes, I use it on my right as I sit at the bench. It catches cases thrown out of my autos real good. Since I like to reload, I looked for a brass catcher online, but never could find one to suit me, so I made mine.

I put it right next to me, almost touching the gun. Even cases ejected over my right shoulder are caught when I adjust the position of the catcher. I sometimes take other paper clips and pull the sides of the t-shirt backwards so that it is actually over the gun, kinda like an awning.

Here's the dimensions it turned out to be. If I ever modify it, It will be to make it wider. Depth is ok.

I kind of figured that, but thought I'd ask to make sure. But like rondog said, his 1911 and some others, like an Ar can sling them bad boys all over the place. lol

But this might work also? It's a tad smaller and would be a bit more convenient.. I'm not sure if it could be slightly modified and made to fit something else or not? But this one, as you can see by the picture, is for an AR. Might also or could also be made to fir an AK or other maybe? Also, one might be able to make one with just a net and 2 zip strips to attach it. Just have to attach it
so it doesn't interfere with the action?

I just did a quick search and found these.

GlockMeister, I liked the one that resembled a fish net - until I saw the price. I'm confident mine will do the same thing, for a lot less $$$.

Whatever works for you. And kudos to not letting your situation stop or prevent you from doing what you enjoy. I only linked and showed what I did for other options.

Gathering brass is a pain any way you look at it. Have you tired just staking out a large plastic tarp? That would catch most of 'em, I'd assume, and I'd think you could just sweep 'em up. Pooper Scoopers work pretty good too. Don't know if hot brass would be a problem on a tarp. Just a thought.

I was just shooting my semi-auto 30-06 and .22 rifles this last weekend at a friends backyard range. It's so damn hard to find those cartridges in grass and shedded fall leaves, especially those .22 shells. My semi-auto .22 shoots those things everywhere, and since the ammo is so cheap, you end up shooting a lot. I stopped myself from shooting the .22 a lot because I didn't want to leave a mess of .22 brass that I couldn't find in the grass and leaves. I was saying to myself that I needed to make something like these brass catchers. I don't care about the .22 shells so much except for the fact they can leave a big mess when you shoot a lot, but I hate losing the 30-06 shells because when I eventually do get a reloading setup, I'll have a lot of cases. Clever set-up, sounds like something I'd bring to a range for controlling those shells.

Pyro, You might try mking a catcher with a chunk of expanded metel at over a buket so the big brass stays on top and the .22 falls down into the buket. KNow what I mean?

rondog, a large tarp would do fine. Except, I only have one leg, the other was amputated below the hip and that's why I made my catcher - to keep me from having to maneuver around picking up brass. I do have a prosthesis, but even with it, on its a chore getting around.

Thanks for the kudos. If I had seen that"fish net" catcher before I made mine, I would most likely have bought it. I sure do like the way it looks. I don't have anything like an AR, so I didn't look long at the catcher you pictured first - but it sure looks like a 100% catcher.

I modified a big aquarium fish net to do the same thing. They're $3-4 at your local pet shop. Since I have a pistol grip on my Mini, I can line up the net using the handle and angle it to catch my brass. I'm going to need to change out the netting at some point as it's plastic, but sewing a cloth to replace the netting would probably work better over the long haul.
