Finally got my safety cert, squirrels and rabbits beware!

I finally finished my hunter's safety today, starting wednesday, I think I'm going to go out tomorrow morning and hunt some squirrels. I have to save the rabbit hunting for later tomorrow night for my friends dad's farm. Man, I've been wanting to do this for more than 10 years now, and it's finally done. I'm gonna get my brother in a class for his hunters safety so we can go hunting together. I envy him somewhat, the class he'll be taking only lasts 4 days, not a month and a half like mine. I'll be sure to take some pictures!

Congrats on your hunter safety certification. Its great that you are also wanting to share the outdoors with your brother. The bond between two brothers who hunt together or good friends,is a very strong one.You guys be careful out there and good luck on them bushytails and bunnies.Post them pics when you get them.

It was cold this morning, the temperature didn't get above 45 degrees. I searched 2 woody areas, and one big field(for grouse). The first woody area did not have anything in it, not even a bird. I took my time taking pauses, walking a few yards, and stopping again. It was windy and cold, and the trees from this area looked like they contained no squirrels as I didn't even see squirrel nests. I did find some droppings from a deer, seems they were eating some red berries in the area. After going from one end of the first woody area to the other, I went back to my car and ate some skittles.

Next I went up the woody area on a hill, there were good signs of squirrels like pine trees, nests, and lots of stuff it looked like squirrels would hang around. Took my time walking slowly, and pausing for minutes at a time. I only hear birds however, so since I had about 45 minutes left before I had to head back to my dorm to go to class, I went out into the fields. Another hunter had come and was walking away from me, I followed one path, and he followed another. I was just watching him walking out there, and about 25 yards from him a hen grouse flew up. Unfortunately he wasn't ready and the hen got away. After no further luck, I went back home.

Squirrels 1, Me 0...

I'm going to be going rabbit hunting this evening, hopefully I'll have better luck and see some squirrels and rabbits. Now if only classes ended sooner!

That's how it goes sometimes. I've been skunked my last 3 times out. Sometimes one fill one's bag in a morning. Other times, well...like I said, I was skunked my last 3 times in the woods.

Well, last night, I just think it was the weather and cold that kept the bushytails outta sight. Though this time I was mostly looking for rabbits, didn't see anything except for three whitetail deer, I'm glad it wasn't deer season because when I saw them, it was three bouncing white flags when I caught sight of them. I only flushed up a rabbit in the last few minutes, except I had clicked the safety on. I was walking into a grassy field, and it was already getting pretty dark, so right before I entered the field, one burst from cover. I aimed, trigger was locked, cursed, undid the safety, and fired as the rabbit ducked under a group of pine trees. Looked around the trees and didn't see him. So I went inside my friends house and talked to him. As I was driving home, I saw a rabbit on the side of the road sitting there mocking me.

Today is looking nice and sunny, so I'm going to go back out as soon as my classes are done. When I was getting up this morning, I looked outside my window and saw a grey squirrel bounding around out there. Grrr...
