Not a him,,,,a her. The gun is in the smiths shop, so I can't take a pic of it. He is looking for a bolt for the gun. Sorry, I don't know guns much with the exception of my husbands 300 savage which is a little over 50 yrs old, or my sons SKS, when I can get the gun back, I will post a pic. He is of little help, as he is now six months behind on his work. Guess we know he must be good at what he does.

AS a Gunsmith...To me , that is Unacceptable for Customer service. If I could Not find the parts, I would give you the gun back and call you if I located them...I'm not supposed to be in the firearms storage Business !!!
A good gunsmith will get the gun back to you within a reasonable amount of time...

Would you be willing to come to my area and give a gunsmith pep talk?

Mainey, if you're from Maine (like your name might imply), could you please PM me telling me where you brought your gun? I've never had an issue with local gunsmiths holding weapons, but it might be good to know for the future.

I can sympathize with ya, I've had one at the smith for about 11 months without any updates either...this ones in Tacoma, WA.
For sure they will do the expensive jobs first, the easy jobs second, and...well...you know already.

I guess I am one of a Dying Breed of Gunsmiths...I know as a Gun owner and collector that I want my Gun in My possession and not in somebody elses rack collecting dust. I dont get paid until I finish the job so I need to get them in , Fix them, and get them Out the door. Over 80% of the guns I have repaired have been while the customer was in the waiting area 15-30 minutes. (That was depending on parts or what was wrong with the gun of course!) but the majority were willing to wait for a few minutes...sure some jobs take longer, Mainly due to the problem of locating parts, but My longest ever job was fixing a G&G members bolt from a pre-64 Winchester that was bubbafied and needed a firing pin, spring , and retainer and that was about 6 weeks to locate the part by looking all over the US for one of the parts. Thanks to G&G members helping find the part, after getting it it was ready to ship in less than 48 hours back to the owner, hand fitted and repaired...I personally prefer to let the owner keep his own weapon if it is a model that parts are not readily available for, and bring it back in when I get the parts to finish the job...That way if I die or get killed in an accident, you have your gun, If my place catches fire, you have your gun...It is just good business practice in my opinion...

There is no good reason for a gunsmith to keep a gun for that long without some timely updates or an offer to give the gun back and call when the parts come in.

Mooseman sure has the right way of doing things.

I wonder if your gunsmith would appreciate waiting for a year or so to get paid after you pick up your mysery gun?

om

Hate to say it but Moose is a dying breed in this country. Ethics has gone to the wayside in most businesses. Maybe I'll get my Martini back and send it to him...ok with you Mooseman?
I got rave reviews about this gunsmith in Tacoma, that's why I chose him; but...
Sorry to Mainey for getting off the subject.

Having to wait for repairs is what prompted me to learn how to work on my own guns.

It is getting worse and worse by each passing year. No way would I let someone keep my gun like that. No sense in them having it.

Rich is probably one of the few that still takes pride in what he does.

Actually, drilling a few holes in the TOP of a wooden Stock ain't a bad idea for a .22/.22WMR class weapon in the single shot variety. I'd bet on it being an old farmer's trick. Probably NOT a dealer option...
