first, second and third line gear

this is what i eventualy would like my gear plan to be... just the way its set up not everything that is listed, that changes from person to person. i thought this was a good idea and thought it should have been in this section and not the disscusion section...

I have layers like that. They aren't as defined, but its like, my ~15lb vest carries essentials. Enough food and shelter and water to get by for a few days. Most of what is in that is actually what that poster considers "primary" stuff. However, I don't see any likely reason I'd lose my vest, so I'll keep it in there. Plus I might not have ideal pants (I might just have jeans on if the situation arises too quickly) for stuffing a bunch of gear in pockets.

My "second" layer is actually a small backpack that holds a tarp and lines / bungees, a small canvas blanket, and a bit more food. It only weighs a couple of pounds and fits well so it is unlikely I'd lose that either.

Other than that, I just have duffel bags and other easily-grabbable items like water jugs, bags of food, sleeping bag, etc.

larmus, Pred's system is kind of close to the way I do it, though everything lives in the Grab & Go pack. There;s a US Army pistol belt with 2 canteens and purification pills (one canteen is full of food tablets), on-the-march first aid kit (as opposed to the household type kit in the backpack), compass pouch, ammo pouch for the AR-7 in the pack, Leatherman, and survival knife (a modified Model 1896 Swedish Mauser bayonet with cut down magnesium firestarter, fishing line, fish hooks, split shot, fishing line, nylon thread and both glover's and cloth needles in the handle). The vest contains a second compass, steel mirror, pocket fishing kit, gel firestarter, Pelton's Official Pocket Survival Manual, a small folding knife, a small flashlight (white, not red; I get by wrapping my fingers over the lens the way I learned how at sea), strike-anywhere matches in one of those 5-in-1 survival whistles, the boresnake and lube for the AR-7, a gigli saw, two mylar blankets, and a Bundeswehr utility bandanna. Everything else is in the pack except the hiking boots, which are attached to the pack frame with a carabiner and get put on first thing.

I may unpack everything and fine this down a little. I'd like to see if I can squeeze in maybe 30 feet of parachute cord into the vest. I'd also really like to get a sealed tin of amphetamines to maintain alertness and energy, but it's so hard to get them that's just a pipe dream.

ive got my gear spread out like that system as well, i just need to refine my system. its kinda bulky and im just trying to slim things up. when i take my urban b-o-b, i always take my mil-belt i have one canteen, large knife, extra ammo and a small survival kit attached to it. you've got stuff on there that i have not thought of, so im going to borrow your ideas if ya dont mind.

...and whats a "gigli saw"?

Tell your doc that you have been trying to learn something new (maybe gun smithing) but can't focus.. Aderol is better than nothing. Whole bottle is prob 5 bucks, but you gotta have a script.

I try to have all my battery powered equipment use the same batteries. My flashlights are LEDs and all use AA batteries. The two way radio also uses AAs. The Red dot Im eventually putting on my AR15 uses AA. The two way radio can also receive emergency weather channels. The only other thing that uses different batteries are any weapon mounted lights. They are types that both use CR123s. More spares for the AR15 light car be kept in the fore grip.

Thats pretty much it give or take a couple things. Its kinda a work in progress.

It's a wire saw about 18 inches long. It's a surgical wire saw, normally used to remove sections of skull for brain surgery. They won't cut down a tree, but they can handle branches just fine. I put split ings in the hole on each end. You can either just pull them with those, or you can thread a shor piece of wood through the split rings to make handles that are easier to hold. Gigli saw and split rings live in a round Altoids tin painted white with the contents written on with a Sharpie marker.

You can get gigli saws on eBay. That's where i got mine, but I don't remember what I paid for it. Wasn't a large amount, though.

Well my gear has always been what I take camping. If I had to leave quick but weight was an issue (I had to run) I'd take my bare essentials packed separately. Contains a sewing kit, water filter, emergency ponchos, emergency blanket, Bic lighter, knife and 550 paracord, toiletries, hemp rope, and plastic bags.
