Just picked up my first Sako yesterday.
Sako M995 has always been on my list of guns to own someday and yesterday I found one that I could not put back on the rack.
My used M995 is in a much loved caliber by me, .270.
The Sako did not come with rings. The store was out of both Sako and Leopold rings! What luck, deer season is next week...
Does anyone know what rings are best? The store told me Leopold.
I like to buy things once, so I am looking for quality.
Does anyone know the history behind the M995? I was once told it has roots to the Sako Military version, but I can't prove this.
I was also told that the M995 is a lesser model of the Sako line...whatever that means and I am fine with a model that might be a little less $$ because nobody wants a Black rifle.
Anything else I should know?
I love the Rifle and can't wait to get the optics on it and to the range I go.
1st Sako, but not the last.
The M995 is the civilian verson of the TRG-S Sniper. It is no less in quality than any other Sako rifle. It is an extremely accurate rifle. I would call Midway 1-800-243-3220 and ask about a rush order for leupold or Sako (preferred) rings.
Thanks for the info.
I have had a Very Hard time finding Sako rings for my M995.
I even drove to Cabelas (just got back) and they did not stock Sako rings.
I ended up with Leupold rings, which as far as I could tell was second best. It was a fine line as to where the rings could be on the base and when we could tighten the rings, I found many scopes that would not work for me. I ended up with Leupold high rings, part #49948.
My first choice scope, a Leupold VX-L would not give me the eye relief I needed, so second best was the Nikon Monarch 4-16x50 BDC.
I used to sell Nikon glass and was/am a photographer and my entire kit has always been Nikon, so really I am splitting hairs between the 2 scopes.
Bottom line, I am happy, Very Happy!
My Brother's brand new Tikka in 300 WSM shot 3 rounds he could cover with a Dime at just over 80 yards. I can only hope my Sako can match that or beat it.
Well Steve, The M995 is great!
Do I want to carry the rifle for 8 hrs. at a time with the rest of my gear...No.
I don't blame my Sako for all the weight. That Nikon scope is all there too.
I went the entire hunting trip with one hand tossed round in the chamber (only ever needed one shot anyways) because the gun shop sent me on my way with a 7mm Mag clip.
It was a good trip, but all I saw was does.
I am already on my search for another Sako...75 or 85 Finnlight in maybe 7mm-08.
I am impressed with the .300 wsm. My brother has this chambered in his T3.
I have to find the Finnlight first, so I will worry about the next caliber later.
These are fine quality rifles. I have the SAKO Hunter model (previous to the SAKO 75) in .416 Remington Magnum (with Leupold rings).
My SAKO is about the most consistently accurate rifle I have owned. The trigger release was crisp right out of the box, no need to mess with it. It's a reliable rifle - I do my part and it does its.
Thanks! Here she's fitted with a Leupold 4x compact scope. My standard load is 92 gr of RE15 behind a 300 gr X bullet, 2950 fps. Shoots flat and hits real hard out to 400 yards.
