growing basil indoors

Can anyone who reads this please provide me with information on growing basil indoors by grow lamp only, i prefer hydroponics but i can't do this at the moment. i would like information that is kind of like basement growing since this i think would be the best IMO and you can grow year round. thanks in advance.

PS. this will be my first thing to grow so something in laymans terms would be good. also if it could explain the terms it uses that would be good too

I grew an entire garden indoors some years ago...

...got everything except the lettuce to do pretty well.

I built a couple of two shelf growing tables (similar to those in the link below, only I used wood) and I used two 4' two bulb wide spectrum (grow light) fluorescent lights per shelf, set on timers to simulate the daylight for a summer season...

...and had a couple of large humidifiers running to help keep the air moist, 'cause the electric heating system would dry the air too much.

I used a high quality growing/potting soil, like miracle grow, and a commercial grade liquid fertilizer.

Temperature of the soil must simulate what it would be during the summer season...

...so a large germination heating pad placed under your grow containers may be needed to achieve this.

I have grown basil indoors with good success. I sometimes bring potted basil indoors for the winter and enjoy it all year. I have no special lights, I just keep it in the kitchen window.

We bring at least one or two plants from most of our herbs in each winter. We keep them in small pots along window sills or in the spare bedroom (lots of windows). The main thing to remember is to keep them trimmed so they will keep producing leaves. Right now we have cilantro, dill, basil, sage, mint, and bay in the house.
