a couple i have thought about are benchmade and sog. as well as possibly another kershaw, they still got the job done.
Bob Loveless got it right back in the early sixties making a drop point hunter from D2. Bob Dozier continues the tradition. My Dozier Master skinner has replaced all my other knives for hunting. The knife is D2 to about 61rc with enough belly in the 31/2 in blade to make skinning easy, yet still works great for gutting & field dressing. Technically not stainless, but very stain resistant and very tough. First year it dressed two deer, skinned three back at "camp" and cut up one. Seemed as sharp as when we started. I do like buck steel, but don't care much for those teeny little handles.

buck and ka-bar are excellent for field dressing, ka-bar and SOG also fill a dive knife role, for a carry knife i prefer a CRKT

My most fave is the spyderco native non serrated with the plastic handle .
the blade is s30v and stays sharp a long time but you may not like
the leaf shaped blade. There are some Kershaws that have the s30v steel
and most are the Ken Onion design like the Leek or the Chive as the smaller versions and some Benchmade may fit the bill. but if you are looking for a budget type blade Buck and Gerber are fine choices also.
I am fond of the s30v steel as it is easier to maintain an edge but not impossible to work one up from a dull blade as the other harder steels are.
But in my honest opinion you get what you pay for and not all high tech steels are good for every chore.

As for the Native you can buy it at wally world for less than 60 bills now
(used to be a 100 buck knife) and it will shave fee-lay paper and cut
most anything you need to.

Just gotta get in on this one. I have/havehad alot of knives from all ranges of the spectrum. My absolute favorite go to girl is "Gracie". A 5" Cold Steel clip point Voyager straight edge. It has done every thing and then some. It truly is the one tool I can count on every time I'd be lost with out it. I have recently gone back to carrying a Spyderco Endura for everyday use. I can't say enough for this company either.Their product will take an edge that angels could dance on and hold it til you cut yourself with it. I am also a fan of CRKT, my m16 was a tank, to bad it was liberated by the enemy.
