what knife??

Ok so i have carried a kershaw for the last couple years and loved both of them i had, BUT one got stolen and i lost the other rabbit hunting the other day. one thing i didn't love about them was their edge. both kershaw knifes i had would get very sharp, but wouldn't hold an edge for more than one or two uses on SMALL game. so now i don't have my regular carry knife, what should i get next? i want one that is sturdy with a fairly heavy blade, but that will also hold a good edge for awhile. anyone have any suggestions?

a couple i have thought about are benchmade and sog. as well as possibly another kershaw, they still got the job done.

Now you get the difference in steels. Sharpen easy, dull quick. Hard to sharpen, hold an edge longer. I have a plain old Buck skinner that takes forever to put an edge on, but it takes forever to get dull. That is my back up knife on hunts. I have a custom knife made in Germany that belonged to my Dad that JUST gets through butchering a Caribou before becoming dull. I also carry a wet-stone in my gear.

I think that Romey is better educated on steel than I, and hopefully he will wade in here.

Yeah I'll second that on Buck. My uncle had one
that was a great knife. Problem was some ---hole
thought it was a good knife too.

Knives are like guns, you get what you pay for, spend the little extra and get the best and it will last you forever. Romey makes custom knives and the are not cheap but they will last you and your children for ever. Just my opinion.

Like I stated in my original post, I carry two knives for field dressing, so I won't be spending time sharpening a knife in the middle of dressing. I also carry a pocket knife for camp chores so my dressing knives stay sharp.

My all the time carry knife is a KerShaw and I don't have to sharp'in it very often, yet I use it daily to cut card board.
I have a high carbon round phillips screw driver I whip the blade on to resharpen it .
It works as a steel.
Next time your hard knives get a little dull, take any kind of smooth round screw driver and work the blade on it.
Becareful not to cut yourself.

Just about any metal will do...A.H

P.S.. My wife found the screw driver laying in the road in front of our house.

When I was a kid, my grandfather and I used to disagree about knives all the time. He liked carbon steel knives because they were easier to sharpen.

I liked stainless steel knives because they were more rust resistant and held an edge longer. Since you are gonna have to resharpen either eventually, I prefer the one that holds an edge better, myself.

I think I own three carbon knives and those because the maker doesn't make that model in stainless....

The Gerber's are pretty good and Case(at least the older ones anyway).
A lot of the German knives are good.

I carry a camillius as an every day knife. I have to sharpen it every time I use it but if I lose it then I have not lost much. My hunting knife is a Colt. Takes an edge and seems to hold it well.

If I am going to do any real work I break out the Ka Bar. For primary use I use a cheap lock blade I got from the NAFC. When they were made in the USA I liked Schrade knives. Unfortunately, others liked them more than I did.

I always carry a Schrade Sharp finger skinning knife. You could put one hell of an edge and it would stay sharp for quite awhile. Love that thing. Still have it too. The shape of the blade makes it excellant for skinning any size game. I've had mine for about 25 years now.

I say either a schrade X-timer or a ka-bar. Ka-bars are more expensive but they will work and last forever. Holds an edge forever. you can get a mule for about 50 bucks. Its a big lockback.

I have had 2 bucks that are recently manufactured and they are both POSs. One go stolen, the other i don't use because it is junk. it will get very sharp but it rusts almost instantly and is supposedly stainless, and also the edge chips if i hit anything halfass solid. I LOVE my old buck knife though. I just need a new everyday carry knife still...i have been carrying my utility knife for now, will wait til after christmas to buy one in case someone gives me one.
