New to AR's

Hey, I really don't know too much about the ar's but in light of the recent election i now will probably purchase one if i can find one. I would like to know some good brands for someone who doesent know much about these and what prices i can expect to pay for the different brands. An M-4 type would be preferable. Thanks

Take a poll of everyone on what is the best brand and you will get 1000 different answers. Bottom line is that Most of the bigger names put together great rifles. Armalite, bushmaster, S&W, etc. all make quality arms. If you are buying a complete rifle expect to pay a grand plus or minus a couple hundred. However, consider building one. That is 2 to 3 hundred cheaper and a heck of a lot of fun to do.

Good Luck and welcome to Black Rifle disease!

what do plan on using your AR for? target? varmint hunting? tactical?

I'm new to this as well, did a lot of homework before I even bought mine. I ended up getting a Bushmaster O.R.C. paid about $950 for it. depending on brand they run as cheap as $750 and upwards of $3000.

Nobody could have put it better.

When I first started I built my first one and I wont go any other route. For a mid grade AR you will pay about $600 or so to build a basic rifle. When I build I go with Model1 uppers and a DPMS lower parts kit. I usually build them for around $700 with an A3 upper and removeable rear sight and chrome lined barrel.

And I don't care what anyone says, all T6 forged alluminum lowers are the same (except for Colt) you will pay more for the name. I think you should build one, like stated above it's fun.

The receiver has to be purchased from a FFL dealer.

Redbeernuts, here is a link to another forum (ar15armory.com) where a poster by the name of Falcon compiled a list of who the actual manufactures were for most of the AR15 lowers. Not too many different MFG's making the vast majority of them. Hope they don't mind me importing their list. I personally didn't have any idea the actual number of munufactures was so small.

Thanks, I had no Idea who made what. Thats nuts. The same lower made by the same company with a different name seems to be worth alot more (or less). Thats good to know.
