The recall has been going on since mid-summer at least. It applies to the first-generation LCPs. The problem has since been fixed. The current production LCPs ("second generation") are fine. I think the Ruger people pay postage/shipping both ways, but you'd have to talk to them.
The site should have a listing of the serial numbers range that are on recall. Get that and print it out, then simply check the s/n of any pistol you are considering to make sure it's not subvject to the recall.
The LCP is not my cup of tea, but the people at Gun Tests think it's a nice little gun. And one of the handgun magazines raved abotu the quality of Ruger's service in this recall matter, so I don't see how you can go wrong.
No worries MrsS! I only knew it because I have one and saw the earlier thread. Linking to it here my provide additional info for those that want it.

Ruger has recently received a small number of reports from the field indicating that LCP pistols can discharge when dropped onto a hard surface with a round in the chamber. We are firmly committed to safety and would like to retrofit all older LCP Pistols. The retrofit involves installation of an upgraded hammer mechanism at no charge to the customer.
We want to remind gun users that, for maximum safety when carrying any pistol with a loaded magazine in place, the chamber should be empty, and the slide should be closed. Any gun may fire if dropped or struck.
How to determine if your pistol needs the retrofit: All LCP pistols bearing prefix “370” (that is, serial number 370-xxxxx) may be affected. Newly manufactured and retrofitted “370” prefix LCP pistols with the new hammer mechanism installed have been marked with a diamond in the flat portion of the slot just behind and below the hammer as shown to the right. Going forward, new pistols will be marked with the serial number prefix “371” (serial number 371-xxxxx). Pistols with the “371” prefix are not affected.
How to arrange to have your pistol retrofitted:

My Ruger LCP came back today. Gone 1 week exactly. Ruger really gets it and I applaud their customer service. They give the extra clip with finger extension as a gift and also threw in a REAL NICE Ruger LCP ball cap.
I am glad to have it back and will head oout to the range to verify before carrying again.
dmw, did you have any of the other work done? also, I contacted ruger about a month ago, and haven't got the paperwork yet...hope it comes soon....i heard that they will file down that little part inside that cuts up the brass casings if you want..they will also make the slide lock bigger(easier to engage) and also blue the barrel...
