Newbie needs a rile.....4x4???

Hey folks, I've been around guns most of my life, but mostly shotguns, 22 rifles and handguns. Moved to Arkansas a couple of years ago and my neighbor brought me out with him deer hunting. I love the outdoors, so even though I didn't get one, I did catch a glimpse of a real nice buck. I currently use a lever action .44 mag Marlin. I'm wanting to get something a bit more standard and am looking at the Mossberg 4x4 in either 270 or 30-06. Any thoughts?

They are a nice looking gun. I personally wish they had some short action calibers. I would love a laminate stock chambered in 7mm-08. As for the gun it is similar to the 100ATR as far as the bolt and action. I have an ATR in .308 and it shoots great, and the action is nice and smooth, maybe a bit sloppy, but very free. I love the thing. Personally I would go with an 30-06 over a .270, but that's just me. Have you priced any yet ?? Just curious as to what the dealers are asking.

The Mossberg rifle in either .270 or .30-06 would

be an excellent gun. The .30-06 does come in a much wider range of factory bullet weight and design loadings so I would recommend this cartridge.

Also, Savage has an excellent bold action rifle at an affordable price.

Just be sure to get a good quality scope as so many guns are "sunk", so to speak, not due to either the gun or the caliber but poor quality optics through which the shooter must view the target.

Thanks for the feed back guys. This is really helping. I shopped the gun at Ft Thompson, a local gun / hunting shop and the 4x4, 30-06 was $289. I checked the Mossberg website and it shows a walnut stock, but what the dealer showed me was a wood laminante. It that is the real choice, I think I'll stick with the wood or camo stock. I looked at the Savage but haven't handled one yet. Going to Bass Pro this weekend in Springfield and will compare there. I'm leaning 4x4 in 30-06 so far. Would 150 grain be appropriate for deer?

150 grain will be fine. How did you like the laminate stock ? I saw a 4x4 with the black synthetic stock and it looked "ok", better than most plastic stocks. I think the laminate looks real good in the photos, but haven't seen one in person.

The laminent looks pretty good, but I was a little surprised at the lack of finish around the vents on the forearm. What I saw was the one that was kind of stripped. They have another pattern that looks a bit more like wood grain. Didn't get to see that one. All in all, pretty good looking gun.

I have the 4X4 in 300 winmag with the synthetic stock. Shoots real good, the stock is very light, which I like and handles the recoil real good.
